Many years ago, I asked one of our students what they think I do the whole day.  One of them said, “You say mass!”  “And then?” I asked. He replied, “I guess you watch TV the rest of the day!” If this were true, it would be a totally BORING life. However, on the contrary, I am pleased to report that I lead a very exciting life. 

Each and every mass is a great privilege to celebrate – to “stand into” the Lord’s shoes – and bring the Eucharist to everyone. From the moment it unfolds at the opening, it builds up to proclaiming the words of scripture, delivering a homily, and the consecration of bread and wine to become the body and blood of Jesus Christ.  It may only be a half-hour on weekdays to a full hour on Sundays; it still elicits the same passion and devotion that we render to it.  

On Saturdays, I spend an average of 3 hours hearing confessions which, practically, is non-stop with penitents coming one after the other.  

Oftentimes, I come a little earlier as I realize that some would like to have a longer conversation than the usual couple of minutes. 

 As I listen intently and dispense God’s forgiveness, it brings so much joy to see a person so burdened with sin as they come in and leave with a joyful heart celebrating the continuous love of God.  

Then, there is the practical management of the parish.  As a pastor, it is my responsibility to see that the buildings are maintained and improved wherever it is needed.  Leadership is needed to make plans and implement renovations or reorganizations to allow a smooth flow of activities and service to our parishioners.  Likewise, I am constantly concerned about being able to pay our bills.  After all, just like any household or company, we need to pay for salaries, power, water, gas, etc.  Simply think about running your home – times fifty or more.  

Then, there’s the FUTURE!  It is very much in my mind and heart that I think about who will sit in the pews 10, 20, 30 + years from now – perhaps long after I am gone.   Please realize that I am working towards the salvation of your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.   While working with a fast-changing world, we need to protect the purity of the teachings of the church and struggle to communicate its continued relevance in our day-to-day lives.  This is where we need the help and cooperation of everyone – from the grandparents, parents, teachers, etc.   

What I have touched on is simply a scratch on the surface of what priests/pastors do.  What makes us go on?  PASSION!  PASSION FOR JESUS!  While the work may be difficult, it is not impossible and it is definitely a joy to do!
