Dear Parishioners,
Pope Francis has scheduled a synod on synodality to take place in 2023. In preparation, he has asked all the dioceses of the world to offer input.
Our bishop will celebrate the opening Mass for the diocesan phase on Sunday at 3 PM in St. Mary's Cathedral. We will also celebrate the 140th anniversary of the founding of our diocese. I plan to concelebrate the Mass. You're welcome to join us in person or to watch the livestream by clicking on the video above.
I imagine that few parishioners have even heard about this synod. I've been watching
EWTN News and reading articles at
Crisis Magazine and
The Catholic Thing. By far the best source I've found is that of our own bishop. You can read his
pastoral letter on the synod. Or you can watch him read it on the video link below. I chose to watch the video. It's probably the easiest and best way for you to find out about the synod.
Our bishop has sent us priests a few e-mails about the synod. He identified several steps to be taken during the diocesan phase. Currently, he is forming a committee to develop plans for the diocese. We will all be invited to participate sometime between November and March. We will likely have a parish listening session here at St. John's. There will also be an on-line survey available.
What I liked about the bishop's video & pastoral letter is that he's not just fulfilling obligations for the synod. He wants all of us in our diocese to "journey together" toward a closer relationship with God.
God love you,
Fr. Jim
