This year, Vocation Awareness Week will be November 7 through November 13. This is a week-long observance in the Catholic Church in the United States for promoting and praying for vocations to the priesthood, the diaconate, and consecrated life. In response to our Lord’s call to pray for “the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest" (Mt 9:38), the Office of Vocation will help to plan and arrange county-wide Holy Hours to pray for vocations on Vocation Awareness Sunday. We encourage parishes to promote these Holy Hours and/or to consider some concrete and intentional form of prayer that your parish could do together on Vocation Awareness Sunday or during the following week. The Archdiocese of San Francisco will celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation for Adults on Saturday, November 20, 2021 at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption. Adults who did not receive the Sacrament of Confirmation but wish to be Confirmed in order to complete their Sacraments of Initiation are welcome to participate provided they have completed the required preparations. The annual Veterans Day Prayer Service will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery on Thursday, November 11 at 11am. The service will take place outdoors in front of the military flags in the Veterans section. The service will be led by Chaplain, Col. C. Michael Padazinski USAF (ret), Chancellor, Archdiocese of San Francisco. Please join with us in prayer for the men and women serving our nation in our Armed Forces and especially for those interred at Holy Cross in the past year. Requiem Mass for the Homeless featuring Benedict Sixteen Choir and Orchestra

On November 6 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Cathedral, we gather to pray for the souls of all who died on the streets of San Francisco. Archbishop Cordileone commissioned this new Requiem Mass for the Homeless from celebrated composer Frank la Rocca, who recently wrote to explain this Mass includes an unusual and intense, 7-minute post-Communion meditation, which he says “communicates the depth and intensity of the suffering of the homeless, from astonishment at people's indifference, anger at their circumstances, and a kind of inner pleading for dignity and compassion. It represents, musically, the voice of those who suffer and die on our streets." The text of the meditation is in Latin, taken from Lamentations 1:12:
"O all you who pass by on the street.
look and see if there be any misery like unto the misery
that has befallen me."
Because of COVID, attendance will be limited to 1000. Overflow will be accommodated on the Cathedral Plaza. After, the Archbishop will lead a procession to St. Anthony's Dining Hall to break bread together. A Conference at St. Patrick's Seminary in Menlo Park follows featuring a talkback with the artists and a Tantum Ergo service with the works of three living Catholic composers.

Annual Mother/Daughter Event (Virtual)

Mothers! The annual mother/daughter event will be held, virtually, on Saturday, November 13. There is a morning session for Tweens (10-12 years old) and an afternoon session for Teens (13-16). Both sessions are designed to help you and your daughter explore God’s special gift of human fertility together. Help her see the beauty and wonder of God’s plan for growing up as a young girl or teenager and becoming a woman. Parishes Needed to Serve Meals at Interfaith Winter Shelter

Parishes are invited to prepare and serve a meal at the Interfaith Winter Shelter, which will be operating at various sites from November 21, 2021 until March 26, 2022. The rotating sites include the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption, which still has a number of open dates. Please note that the sign-ups are for groups, not individuals. All volunteers who are cooking and/or serving on-site will be required to wear masks and show proof of vaccination, per COVID protocols. The San Francisco Interfaith Council will provide specific guidance about food preparation and amounts required. Thank you for your generosity!
