Respect Life
Last week, I asked the question, “What are we to do?” regarding respect life and in dealing with the grave issue of abortion. Today, I offer a few suggestions.
First, allow the mercy of God to come to rest upon us. What could be more merciful than praying and working to bring about an end to legal abortions resulting from Roe v. Wade? I understand the Supreme Court will be reconsidering the legality of this terrible decision come December. Let’s make it a “new Advent” by working to convert hearts, especially the hearts of our elected officials in Washington, to
make them “people of life” and for us to elect only those with the moral conviction who are willing to work for the sanctity of life. Let us work and pray that this becomes a time for us to spread the Gospel of Life to all and to liveChrist’s Commandment regarding life to “…love one another as I have loved you…” and this love must be
extended to the unborn. Saint Pope John Paul said, “…we are faced with an enormous and dramatic clash between good and evil, death and life, the culture of death and the culture of life.” We, all of us, have a duty and responsibility to advance the “Culture of Life.” No ifs, and, or buts! Today, there are some Catholic politicians who hide behind the lies of “pro-choice.” Saint Pope John Paul II reminded everyone involved in civic and legislative affairs that “…a law which violates an innocent
person’s natural right to life is unjust, and as such is not a valid law.” [Evangelium Vitae 90]. He further went on to say, “…there is a grave and clear obligation to oppose [such laws] by conscientious objection…” Acts 5:29 stated it this way: And now, Lord, take note of their threats, and enable your servants to speak your word with boldness…” Simply stated we are being told that we must obey God
rather than man!
It’s easy to become discouraged, especially when we see all the work that has to be done to end abortion and to end the laws allowing this abomination. On those days that we feel sorry for ourselves, we aren’t alone. We had a friend in the Book of Habakkuk who felt just like us and cried out, “How long, O Lord?”
Our day will come, hopefully this December.
