November 14, 2021 — Thirty-Third Sunday In Ordinary Time
Today’s readings are in stark contrast to the joy of the holiday season that is fast approaching, warning us instead of dark times ahead and our inevitable judgment day.
The first reading from the prophet Daniel describes a time “unsurpassed in distress since nations began” and warns that “many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake; some shall live forever, and others shall be an everlasting horror and disgrace.” The second reading, from Hebrews, speaks of Christ who “waits until his enemies are made his footstool.”
However, when we firmly establish for ourselves as individuals — as a family and as a parish that we will give to God the first and best portion of our Time, Talent, and Treasure — the warnings we read in the Scriptures today should be no cause for alarm. In fact, we can view these words as encouragement — “Keep Calm and Steward On,” no matter what comes our way.
One of the blessings of a stewardship way of life is that in challenging times, whether in our homes or workplaces or even our beloved Church itself, we can take great comfort in knowing we have a concrete plan to keep our priorities in proper order. And, when we put God first in all aspects of our lives, we will experience the peace that He gives that surpasses all understanding.

This year, Vocation Awareness Week will be November 7 through November 13. This is a week-long observance in the Catholic Church in the United States for promoting and praying for vocations to the priesthood, the diaconate, and consecrated life. In response to our Lord’s call to pray for “the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest" (Mt 9:38), the Office of Vocation will help to plan and arrange county-wide Holy Hours to pray for vocations on Vocation Awareness Sunday. We encourage parishes to promote these Holy Hours and/or to consider some concrete and intentional form of prayer that your parish could do together on Vocation Awareness Sunday or during the following week. Since humans began to huddle together for protection thousands of years ago, these questions have been part of how civilizations and cultures define heaven, the good place beyond this one. From Christianity to Islam to Hinduism and beyond, from the brush of Michelangelo to the pen of Dante, people across millennia have tried to explain and describe heaven in ways that are distinctive and analogous, unique and universal. In this engrossing cultural history of heaven, Catherine Wolff delves into how people and cultures have defined heaven over the centuries. Catherine Wolff is the former Director of the Arrupe Center for Community-Based Learning at Santa Clara University. She is the editor of Not Less Than Everything: Catholic Writers on Heroes of Conscience from Joan of Arc to Oscar Romero (HarperCollins, 2013), and the author of Beyond

On November 14, we will be joining the statewide kickoff of the Laudato Si Action Platform. This effort is in line with the Vatican’s launch of a seven-year grassroots effort across the globe to put the message of Laudato Si into practice. As part of this kickoff, parishes are encouraged to include the message of caring for our common home in the Masses that weekend. Materials including prayers of the faithful, sample homilies, music suggestions, and bulletin inserts are attached below in both English and Spanish.
