Message to our Members re Per Capita Fee Increase – For Consideration
Facts:
- It has been 10 years since the last increase in National per capita fee increase
- We have experienced operating deficits for many of those past years, which have been covered through investment income and the sale of investments
- Increase in expenses have continued to affect our deficit; facility cost, supplies, conventions, travel, salaries, league promotion, and magazine cost.
- Decrease in membership over the past 3 years has been close to 12,000 members
- Covid has made its mark on our League by distancing our members from one another but also from our parish, diocesan and national councils.
- The younger generation of Catholics are frustrated and upset with the church today and are not playing an active role in our parish communities.
Solutions:
- In 2017-2018 talks began to develop a Strategic Plan to revise and change the format of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada. Motion was made to invest $1,000,000 from the investment fund to cover this 5-year project. This would not affect the financial operation of the League.
- It is time for the League to invest in its membership at all levels. The Welcome Program was developed and needs to be promoted with the parish councils through Provincial Councils.
- The Board of Directors have been actively looking at and making tough decisions to conserve expenses. The League magazine went digital this fall, and we will likely see one digital copy each year into the future. Members will be given an opportunity to receive ALL future magazines digitally. The possibility of having National conventions virtually every other year is another possibility.
- Our Bishops are being asked to encourage their priests to support the League. We need to invite ladies from our parish communities with our Parish Priest standing next to our Parish/Diocesan/Provincial President. We need to show that we are a strong spiritual organization rooted in gospel values and support God’s people. We, the Catholic Women’s League of Canada, play a vital role in the Catholic Church as confirmed by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Hello everyone, Here's a list of upcoming events with their dates. As I finalize certain information, I will be sending out official notifications for the events. This is just a quick update so you can let people know that the events are happening and when.
Archbishop's Potluck: Friday, November 26th at 6:30 in the Baudoux Hall at the Archbishop's residence. This is for the Diocesan Executive, Parish Presidents and Life Members. This year, due to restrictions and safety concerns, instead of bringing a dish to serve, we will be ordering a meal from the kitchen hopefully. We are asking for a cost of $10 per person. Note - This has not been finalized yet ( about the cost and ordering from the kitchen). Subject to change.
Day of Reflection: Saturday, November 27th. This will be an afternoon event only. From 1pm - approximately 4pm. We are looking for a space to use. If your council has a hall that we can use, please let me know as soon as possible as, if we don't have a location by November, we may have to cancel the event.
Winter Meeting: Saturday, January 22nd.
Day of Celebration: TBD - Still looking for a host council.
St. Boniface Convention or AMM: Saturday, April 23rd at Mary, Mother of the Church.

Communiqué #7
Care For Our Common Home
TO: Diocesan Presidents (for information and forwarding to Parish Councils)
Diocesan Past Presidents
CC: Provincial Executive (for information)
FROM: Rolande Chernichan, Provincial Past President. EDITED BY ANNE TO SHORTEN
We have been blessed with a glorious autumn of beautiful weather and delayed frosts making it possible for flowers and foliage to display their splendour well past Thanksgiving. Many members have been vaccinated
so councils are gradually and cautiously resuming in-person meetings in keeping with pandemic protocols.
There is joy and optimism in being able to gather again, to share in the sisterhood and spirituality of the League and to journey forward in hope.
The ability to gather in person presents parish councils with the opportunity to conduct the Instructed Vote regarding the increase in national per capita fees as well as amendments to the Constitution & Bylaws(C&B). For each change that is proposed, a detailed rationale was provided in the national amendmentspackage. Council executives have been entrusted to communicate to members the rationale for each change and to provide for open discussion within the setting of an in-person meeting of members in order to conduct each Instructed Vote. It would be advisable to notify membership in writing that the outcomes of the votes will have lasting effect on the League and that member participation by attending the meeting and
participating in voting is important and valued. Members should be given sufficient advance notice of the meeting where it is intended to hold the votes on the proposed changes.
Instructed Vote by over 1100 parish councils across Canada will determine the course of action and the
financial viability of The Catholic Women’s League of Canada.
May all discussions, deliberations and discernment leading to a decision regarding each Instructed Vote be
done prayerfully, guided by the Holy Spirit and through the intercession of Our Lady of Good Counsel.
Blessings,
Rolande Chernichan
