Support your Parish with an IRA
Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)
Donors age 70½ or older may qualify to make a charitable gift directly from an IRA to your parish. A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) is a direct transfer of funds from your IRA custodian, payable to a qualified charity, such as your parish. As long as certain requirements are met, QCDs can fulfill your required minimum distribution (RMD), avoid paying income tax on the distribution, and provide a significant gift to support the work and mission of your parish.
A few points when considering an IRA QCD:
· the donor must be 70½ years old or older
· the distribution must transfer directly from your IRA to a qualified charitable organization
· each individual in a married couple can donate up to $100,000 from individual IRA accounts
· Note: the gift would not be eligible for a charitable income tax deduction
In addition, Congress included a provision in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act intended to provide some relief for charitable organizations. Section 2104 of the CARES Act permits eligible individuals who do not itemize deductions to deduct $300 of qualified charitable contributions as an "above-the-line" deduction, i.e., as an adjustment in determining adjusted gross income (AGI), for tax years beginning in 2020.
When you make a charitable contribution of cash to a qualifying public charity, in 2020, under the CARES Act, you can deduct up to 100% of your adjusted gross income. The temporarily increases the individual AGI limits for cash contributions made to qualified public charities in 2020. The CARES Act provisions do not apply to contributions to supporting organizations nor public charities that sponsor
donor-advised funds, like Fidelity Charitable.
