Special Letter and Update
Dear Students and Parishioners:
During these days as we continue to see our beautiful back country destroyed and our homes and even parishes churches in Carpinteria and Montecito threatened by fire, I want to thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we play things “day-by-day” here at St. Mark’s. As of Sunday, most of our UCSB students are out the area and finals have been postponed to January. Furthermore, our primary and high schools have closed early for the winter break. Because of these closures, coupled with very poor air quality from the smoke and ash, I made the decision to cancel our special 7:00pm Spanish Our Lady of Guadalupe Mass tonight and instead, try to focus on a OLG weekend remembrance during the 12noon Spanish Advent Sunday Mass, when God willing, fire fighters will be a little further along extinguishing this terrible wildfire and improving the air quality in the area.
This week, the St. Mark’s office is closed, but we will continue to celebrate Daily Mass, unless conditions worsen. Please remember that during Winter Break, we do not celebrate a 7:00pm student Mass.
Next week, the office will be open on Tuesday and Thursday for very limited hours (10-2pm) and then closed again through the first weeks of January. Normal (10am-5pm) office hours will resume when classes resume, on January 15th, 2018.
Because Christmas falls on Monday the year, the Church asks us to be conscientious, and remember that we are required to attend both a 4th Sunday of Advent Mass and then a follow-on Mass on Sunday night Christmas Vigil or Monday morning Christas Day mass. Please refer to our website calendar (www.saint-marks) for mass times during Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Meantime, please watch these two videos from our regional episcopal leader, Bishop Robert Barron. The first is a message and prayer for all affected by the Thomas Fire, and the second is a video of the local Our Lady of Guadalupe celebration this past weekend.

To get a glimpse of what our airmen have been doing, please see these brief videos:
