This month is going to go fast~
Some important dates:
~Wednesday December 16th, 6:30 pm Christmas Concert (Community Center)
~Wednesday, December 22 1:00 Dismissal for Christmas Break
Reading: This week we continue to work on reading words with short vowels, digraphs and blends in sentences. Next week we will introduce Open Syllable words.....stay tuned to learn what that means!
Writing: We started our December Journals this week. This new journal pushes us to the next level in writing independently. Students need to write the complete date on their own (one of our first grade standards) ex: December 3, 2021 We have been practicing this from day 1 of school, so most of them know how to do this and can use the calendar to help them with spelling. They still have pictures on the bottom to give them ideas of what to write about, but they are now writing their own sentences about one topic. (No sentence starters!) The first graders are also encouraged to write the entire 10-13 minutes and go on to use the next page if they run out of space. Next month we will talk about editing their writing, re-reading to check for mistakes and to make sure it makes sense as well as checking for punctuation. We try to master one or two skill at a time before moving on to something new.
Math: This week in first grade we have been continuing to work on addition and subtraction, and numbers to 120. Today we introduced tens and ones. This is very confusing at first for first graders. There are many different ways to teach this as well. So far, we have talked about how we can use cubes to represent ones. When we get 10 cubes, we can trade them in for a line of 10. So, if we want to show 38 we would have 3 groups (lines) of 10 and 8 single cubes. This equals 38 in all.
This week we have had a few students home with stomach issues, runny noses and also fevers. Stay healthy thank you for keeping your child home when they are ill. We REALLY appreciate it!
Monday and Tuesday Mrs. M will be teaching.
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday Mrs. Luers is teaching.
