Our church had the incredible privilege of welcoming the Christmas season with hundreds of our Grand Terrace neighbors! The 7th Annual Light Up Grand Terrace celebration was held on our church grounds yesterday. There was fun for the entire family, from food trucks to musical and dance performances, ice skating and so much more!
Pastor Tara VinCross offered the welcome and invocation. Grand Terrace Mayor Darcy McNaboe also welcomed attendees, thanked everyone who made the event possible, and introduced the city officials present at the event.
Our children's choir blessed attendees with two songs; their last number included Christmas favorites. There were fun booths from local businesses and organizations for participants to enjoy. Our pastoral team had a booth – a living nativity petting zoo complete with a farmer dressed as a biblical shepherd! The pastors also raffled off several family-friendly giveaways.
Chastdei Kotsay oversees entertainment for the Light Up Grand Terrace event. She says Azure Hills is an integral part of this community, and she's thankful this event could be held at our church. "It's amazing to come out here. It brings the community together, and Azure Hills, to me, is a pillar in the community, so to be able to do it here and bring the community together at Azure Hills is a bonus."
Our children's choir wasn't the only group making a joyful noise; the Grand Terrace High School marching band performed for the event as well! Onlookers surrounded the band as members played several numbers.
"What I love about this event is that it brings all the different groups in our community together from soccer to the high school to the middle school; pretty much everyone comes out for this event whether they are performing or hosting a booth," said Frank'e Byma, Chair for the Light Up Grand Terrace event.
A Christmas celebration wouldn't be complete without Santa Claus. The jolly ol' elf arrived in a pickup truck escorted by one of our local fire trucks. Once Santa arrived, the City's Christmas tree was lit, officially welcoming this joyous season!
Mayor McNaboe reflected on the significance of this year’s event following last year’s shut down due to the pandemic. “After taking a year off, it was a pleasure to return to this annual event that effectively brings the community together in the spirit of the season. What makes Light Up GT extra special is the performances by our youth dance, cheer groups and the GTHS Legacy Regiment Band. What makes the event especially festive is the participation of our local service clubs and businesses giving their time to create fun activities for attendees. The inspiration for this event came from community volunteers who are the energy that make this such a phenomenal event every year, making it an easy decision for the City Council to approve the City sponsoring this event. Thank you to Azure Hills Church for being such gracious hosts and thank you to all who came together with spirit, energy, and dedication - you have given the City of Grand Terrace such a wonderful gift.”
