As we begin the last week of Advent the gospel gives us four characters that tie together the themes of this season. First is the Christ child in Mary’s womb. We witness how He touches the lives of the three other people in this scene just by the act of His presence. In the same way, He comes into our lives, in quiet moments and with subtle signs. At the end of time, Jesus will come in radiant glory and with great fanfare. In the meantime, as He comes to encounter us He does so in subtle ways. We need to be prepared to recognize Him and greet Him. 

The second figure for us to reflect on today is the person of the Virgin Mary. She is the one chosen to bear the son of God, yet rather than secluding herself to ponder this great gift, or rather than asking for help with her own pregnancy she is moved to respond in a very different way by going to assist her cousin Elizabeth. We are called to live in the same way. As I’ve mentioned many times in the past, the world invites us to continually discover what advantage we can gain in a given situation, but God invites us to live in such a way that we discover what gifts do we have within ourselves that we can share for the good of others. When we receive Christ, in the scriptures, and in the Eucharist, we are not meant to keep this treasure for ourselves. This treasure must be shared.

           John the Baptist is our third companion this week. He’s a prominent figure during the Advent season. Even from within His mother’s womb he is already preparing the way of the Lord and expressing the joy which the coming of the Lord brings to the lives of all. Each of us should live this same spirit of rejoicing, sharing the love of Christ with all. 

           Lastly, we have the person of Elizabeth who marvels and praises all that is taking place. She is a woman of deep faith who trusted that truly nothing is impossible for God. The depths of her faith allow her to see God’s action not only in her life but also in the unfolding of all of salvation history. She reminds us of the importance of a life of faith where each of us has a deep personal relationship with God which gives us the strength to face the challenges of life, to trust in God’s promises even when they seem unlikely, and to rejoice and praise God at all times! May our reflections on the abundant generosity of God coming to dwell in our midst strengthen our faith, and may the lessons of this Advent season be multiplied in the year ahead of us. — Fr. Carlos

Ao iniciarmos a última semana do Advento, o evangelho nos dá quatro personagens que unem os temas desta temporada. O primeiro é o menino Jesus no ventre de Maria. Testemunhamos como Ele toca a vida das três outras pessoas nesta cena apenas pelo ato de Sua presença. Da mesma forma, Ele entra em nossa vida, em momentos de silêncio e com sinais sutis. No final dos tempos, Jesus virá em glória radiante e com grande fanfarra. Nesse ínterim, quando vem ao nosso encontro, Ele o faz de maneiras sutis. Precisamos estar preparados para reconhecê-lo e saudá-lo.

A segunda figura sobre a qual devemos refletir hoje é a pessoa da Virgem Maria. Ela é a escolhida para dar a luz ao Filho de Deus, mas em vez de se isolar para refletir sobre este grande dom, ou em vez de pedir ajuda para sua própria gravidez, ela é movida a responder de uma maneira muito diferente, indo ajudar sua prima Isabel . Somos chamados a viver da mesma maneira. Como já mencionei muitas vezes no passado, o mundo nos convida a olhar continuamente que vantagem podemos obter em uma dada situação, mas Deus nos convida a viver de tal forma que olhamos generosamente quais dons temos dentro de nós e como os podemos compartilhar para o bem dos outros. Quando recebemos a Cristo, nas escrituras e na Eucaristia, não devemos guardar esse tesouro para nós mesmos. Este tesouro deve ser compartilhado.

João Batista é nosso terceiro companheiro nesta semana. Ele é uma figura proeminente durante o tempo do Advento. Ainda dentro do ventre de sua mãe, ele já está preparando o caminho do Senhor e expressando a alegria que a vinda do Senhor traz para a vida de todos. Cada um de nós deve viver esse mesmo espírito de alegria, compartilhando o amor de Cristo com todos.

Por último, temos a pessoa de Isabel que maravilha e elogia tudo o que se passa. Ela é uma mulher de profunda fé que confiou que realmente nada é impossível para Deus. A profundidade de sua fé permite que ela veja a ação de Deus não apenas em sua vida, mas também no desenrolar de toda a história da salvação. Ela nos lembra a importância de uma vida de fé onde cada um de nós tem uma relação pessoal profunda com Deus que nos dá força para enfrentar os desafios da vida, para confiar nas promessas de Deus mesmo quando parecem improváveis, e para nos alegrar e louvar Deus em todos os momentos! Que nossas reflexões sobre a abundante generosidade de Deus vindo habitar em nosso meio fortaleçam nossa fé, e que as lições deste tempo do Advento sejam multiplicadas no ano que temos por diante. - Pe.
