In the Bleak Mid-Winter
I have grown to love this song! This poem by English poet Christina Rossetti and then set to music by Gustav Holst has become a popular Christmas song. I may be jumping the season since this song is usually sung at Christmas time; however, living in the Northern Hemisphere, the days already seem bleak. Some of the lyrics are:
In the bleak midwinter
Frosty wind made moan
Earth stood hard as iron
Water like a stone
Snow had fallen snow on snow on snow
In the bleak midwinter
How stark! It makes me feel cold!
However, the lyrics continue:
What can I give him?
Poor as I am
Give him my heart.
Is my heart prepared to give to him at Christmas? It needs work! I know a contrite confession will help! This week the church celebrates St. John of the Cross who experienced the dark night of the soul. As part of his experience he said that he needed to die to himself to achieve total union with God. I pray that I can die to myself so my heart is ready to give to him at Christmas! The rendition I have for you of In the Bleak Midwinter may be a bit unusual.
