The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God
Happy New Year, everyone! We made it to 2022!
With every new year comes a chance for new beginnings, new mindsets, and new graces that the Lord wants us to receive. How will this year be different in our walk with Christ?
The Church celebrates Mary as the Holy Mother of God. As the Ark of the New Covenant, the woman conceived without sin to bear the Body of Christ, Mary does not lord over the rest of us, but intercedes constantly and has been given to us by Christ Himself from the Cross: "Behold your mother!" (John 19:27).

Poverello House is a Franciscan-based day shelter, providing comfort, meals, laundry facilities, and clothing to homeless men. They sent us an urgent request for items to assist those "living on the streets" as our weather has turned cold. Please consider sharing the warmth this winter season by donating: Thermal underwear, warm jackets, gloves, and heavy socks. Sizes: M, L, XL new or used. We Three Kings
Why are the wise men important to the Christian story?
Jesus came for all people and all nations. From his birth, Christ is celebrated by heavenly angels, lowly shepherds, and even pagan astrologers from the East—the Magi. Jesus is already gathering the tribes of Israel and beginning his work of outreach to the world.
The Magi and their gifts—gold, frankincense, and myrrh—are foreshadowed from Isaiah's prophecy (Is 60:1-6). Gold for his royalty, frankincense for his priesthood, and myrrh for his death. Strange gifts for a baby, but these gifts point towards Jesus' destiny of facing down death and emerging victoriously.
The Magi don't return to the paranoid and murderous King Herod after they encountered Christ; "they departed for their country by another way" (Matt 2:12). When we have experienced the love and reality of Christ, we are forever changed and we all leave "by another way." May we all be pierced and renewed by this love of God!
Lord, every nation on earth will adore you!
