Today we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Some may wonder at the fact that Jesus asked to be baptized. To be baptized, prior to Jesus’ baptism, was a sign of repentance and renewal, and it was also a gesture that could be used to unite disciples to a particular teacher. However, as with many things Jesus did, he took a practice that had existed and by participating in it He gave it a much deeper meaning.  

Jesus is baptized in part to fulfill prophecies that had been given such as what the prophet Isaiah wrote, “But a shoot shall sprout from the stumpof Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom.The spirit of the LORD  shall rest upon him:a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, A spirit of counsel and of strength, a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the LORD, and his delight shall be the fear of the LORD. (Is 11:1-3)  

Jesus’ baptism is also one of the many epiphany moments in His life. The Epiphanies are those times where the divinity of Jesus shines out through His humanity. As St Justin Martyr says in his Dialogue with Trypho, “When Jesus came to the waters, He was deemed a carpenter, but the proclamation of the Father and the descent of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove showed him to be far more than a mere worker of wood.” 

Jesus’ baptism also points toward His death and resurrection. What Jesus begins in the Jordan, taking our sins upon Himself, He completes perfectly upon the cross. He even speaks of his crucifixion as a baptism. (Mk 10:38; Lk 12:50).

            As we consider the power and significance of Jesus’ baptism, it should make us look again at how we approach baptism. Baptism isn’t just a nice ceremony or a rite of passage. We are baptized in imitation of Christ. Baptism gives us forgiveness of original sin and all personal sin. This means that a person baptized as an adult ends up with as clean a slate as an infant that is baptized, but this is no excuse to delay baptism! Baptism makes us adoptive children of the Father, members of the body of Christ, and temples of the Holy Spirit. Our baptism entrusts us with the mission of bringing Christ’s light into the world. This is an important mission entrusted to us. It’s also entrusted to our Godparents, which is why the Church insists that they should be a person who is confirmed and who actively lives their Catholic faith because their primary role is to help their godchild to keep that faith alive and shining.   

            As we celebrate our Lord’s baptism, may we also reflect upon the graces He has given us at our baptism. In our baptism, we join Jesus in His death, and may our living and carrying of His light prepare us one day to join Him in resurrection and in eternal glory. – Fr. Carlos 

Hoje celebramos a festa do Baptismo do Senhor. Alguns podem se perguntar porque foi que Jesus pediu para ser batizado. Ser batizado, antes do batismo de Jesus, era um sinal de arrependimento e renovação, e também era um gesto que podia ser usado como expressão da união entre um mestre e seus discipulos. No entanto, como com muitas coisas que Jesus fez, ele transformou uma prática que já existia e, ao participar dela, deu-lhe um significado muito mais profundo.

Jesus é batizado em parte para cumprir profecias que foram dadas, como o que o profeta Isaías escreveu: “"Um renovo sairá do tronco de Jessé, e um rebento brotará de suas raízes. Sobre ele repousará o Espírito do Senhor, Espírito de sabedoria e de entendimento, Espírito de prudência e de coragem, Espírito de ciência e de temor do Senhor. Sua alegria se encontrará no temor do Senhor." (Is 11: 1-3)

O batismo de Jesus também é um dos muitos momentos de epifania em Sua vida. As epifanias são aqueles momentos em que a divindade de Jesus resplandece por meio de sua humanidade. Como diz São Justino Mártir em seu Diálogo com Trifão: “Quando Jesus veio às águas, foi considerado carpinteiro, mas a proclamação do Pai e a descida do Espírito Santo em forma de pomba mostraram que ele era muito mais do que um mero trabalhador da madeira. ”

O batismo de Jesus também aponta para Sua morte e ressurreição. O que Jesus começou no Jordão, levando nossos pecados sobre Si, Ele completou perfeitamente na cruz. Ele até fala de sua crucificação como um batismo. (Mc 10:38; Lc 12:50).

Ao considerarmos o poder e o significado do batismo de Jesus, isso deve nos fazer olhar novamente para como celebramos o batismo. O batismo não é apenas uma bela cerimônia ou um rito de passagem. Somos batizados em imitação de Cristo. O batismo nos dá perdão do pecado original e de todos os pecados pessoais. Isso significa que uma pessoa batizada como um adulto termina com uma ficha tão limpa quanto uma criança que é batizada, mas isso não é desculpa para atrasar o batismo! O batismo nos torna filhos e filhas adotivos do Pai, membros do corpo de Cristo e templos do Espírito Santo. Nosso batismo nos confia a missão de levar a luz de Cristo ao mundo. Esta é uma importante missão que nos foi confiada. Também é confiado aos nossos padrinhos, e é por isso que a Igreja insiste que eles devem ser pessoas crismadas que vivem ativamente sua fé católica, porque seu papel principal é ajudar seu afilhado a manter essa fé viva e brilhante.

Ao celebrarmos o batismo de nosso Senhor, esperemos que possamos também refletir sobre as graças que Ele nos deu em nosso batismo. Em nosso batismo nos unimos a Jesus em Sua morte, e que nosso viver e levar Sua luz nos prepare um dia para nos unir a Ele na ressurreição e na glória eterna. - Pe. Carlos
