Ordinary Discipleship
Jesus’ mother said to the servants,
“Do whatever he tells you.”
Jn. 2:5
As we begin this season of Ordinary Time, we hear Mary teach us what we need to know. She tells the servants “Do whatever he tells you” (Jn. 2:5). It is that simple. That is the Mother of God’s one-line definition of what it means to be a disciple. Do whatever he tells you!
But how do we do what Jesus is telling us? He lived 2000 years ago. How could he “tell us” anything? And if he did have something to say, what would he know about my life now? As an adult, Jesus never traveled more than 200 miles from his hometown in the Middle East. His world didn’t have electric lights, not to mention the internet. Jesus can seem remote. How can we do whatever he tells us?
What we forget is that Jesus is still alive and wants to teach us what we need to know to live in the Kingdom of God. He is not distant or hard to find. He is right here. Through his resurrection, Jesus has made himself available to you right now. In the midst of your...
