As we enter into ordinary time we do so while reflecting on a third epiphany experience in the life of Jesus. This time it happens during the first miracle of his public ministry when Jesus turned water into wine at the wedding at Cana. Along with the veneration of the magi, and Jesus’  baptism at the Jordan His miracle at Cana helps us to see Jesus in the fullness of His humanity and the fullness of His divinity.  It may seem odd at first pass that His first miracle was to take water and turn it into wine so that a wedding feast, which had likely been going on for some time, could continue. However, God’s ways are not our ways, and this miraculous transformation tells us much about who God is and how He wants us to relate to Him. 

In the scriptures, wine is a symbol of celebration and abundance. It is a symbol of God’s blessings upon His people and the joy that the fruits of the world around us bring into our lives. Yes, the scriptures make clear the perils of excess and drunkenness but from early on the use of wine was an important part of how God’s chosen people celebrated and worshipped. God makes clear that He’s a God of abundance. He gives us the ordinary goods of human life and through the cultivation of our talents and of the world around us, God helps us to make those goods extraordinary. Sometimes God intervenes as He does in creation and in other miraculous moments when He brings something out of nothing, but most often His intervention begins first by asking us to give of ourselves and then by God taking what we’ve given and then turning it into an abundant gift. In relating to us in this way God moves us to a deeper expression of faith and participation in God’s work of salvation.  

When reflecting on the wedding at Cana, I wonder how often we pause to contemplate the complexities of the scene. We read of the transformation of water into wine and of the party being saved, but do we stop to think of the great depth of faith shown by Mary, and of the trust shown by the servants at the feast? Mary knows her Son and who He is. Throughout the gospels Mary’s words serve to prepare the way for Him to enter the world and for His mission to unfold. The servants know that the wine is gone, and in response, they’re being asked to fill six massive stone jars with water. What good is that going to do? They must have wondered, and yet they do it. There is no clap of thunder, no earthquake, no massive external sign to show that God has acted mightily, the only sign is an abundant quantity of wine, enough to fill about 900 of our modern wine bottles. 

In this miracle, Jesus makes three things clear. First of all, He is God, with full dominion over all creation. Second of all, He is attentive to our needs. Third of all, He can yield a great harvest through the most mundane elements of our lives. All that is required is that we are willing to do what He asks of us and have faith. As we enter into ordinary time, it may seem that the signs of God’s glory fade away with the putting away of the decorations of the Christmas season, but nothing could be further from the truth. God’s glory remains among us and its manifestation shines through the events of our daily lives. It’s not as though God is any less Emmanuel, God with us, outside of the Christmas season. So, have faith, turn to the Lord when the wine runs out in the various aspects of your lives, and above all do whatever He tells you! - Fr. Carlos

            Ao entrarmos no tempo comum, refletimos sobre uma terceira experiência de epifania na vida de Jesus. Esta vez acontece durante o primeiro milagre de seu ministério público quando Jesus transformou água em vinho nas bodas de Caná. Junto com a veneração dos reis magos e o batismo de Jesus no rio Jordão, Seu milagre em Caná nos ajuda a ver Jesus na plenitude de Sua humanidade e na plenitude de Sua divindade. Pode parecer estranho à primeira vista que Seu primeiro milagre foi transformar água em vinho para que uma festa de casamento, que provavelmente já estava acontecendo há algum tempo, pudesse continuar. No entanto, os caminhos de Deus não são os nossos caminhos, e essa transformação milagrosa nos diz muito sobre quem Deus é e como Ele quer que nos relacionemos com Ele. 

Nas escrituras, o vinho é um símbolo de celebração e abundância. É um símbolo das bênçãos de Deus sobre Seu povo e a alegria que os frutos do mundo ao nosso redor trazem para nossas vidas. Sim, as escrituras deixam claros os perigos do excesso e da embriaguez, mas desde há muito tempo o uso do vinho foi uma parte importante de como o povo escolhido de Deus celebrava e adorava. Deus deixa claro que Ele é um Deus de abundância. Ele nos dá os bens comuns da vida humana e através do cultivo de nossos talentos e do mundo ao nosso redor, Deus nos ajuda a tornar esses bens em dons extraordinários. Às vezes Deus intervém como Ele faz na criação e em outros momentos milagrosos quando Ele traz algo do nada, mas na maioria das vezes Sua intervenção começa primeiro pedindo-nos para dar de nós mesmos e depois por Deus pegando o que demos e transformando-o em um presente abundante. Ao relacionar-se conosco dessa maneira, Deus nos move para uma expressão mais profunda de fé e participação em Sua obra de salvação. 

Ao refletir sobre as bodas de Caná, me pergunto quantas vezes paramos para contemplar as complexidades da cena. Lemos sobre a transformação da água em vinho e sobre a salvação da festa, mas paramos para pensar na grande profundidade da fé demonstrada por Maria e na confiança demonstrada pelos servos na festa? Maria conhece seu Filho e quem Ele é. Ao longo dos evangelhos, as palavras de Maria servem para preparar o caminho para que Ele entre no mundo e para que Sua missão se desdobre. Os servos sabem que o vinho acabou e, em resposta, estão sendo solicitados a encher seis enormes jarros de pedra com água. Eles devem ter se perguntado que bem vai fazer isso, e ainda assim o fazem. Não há trovão, nenhum terremoto, nenhum sinal externo maciço para mostrar que Deus agiu poderosamente, o único sinal é uma quantidade abundante de vinho, suficiente para encher cerca de 900 de nossas garrafas de vinho modernas. Neste milagre, Jesus deixa três coisas claras. Em primeiro lugar, Ele é Deus, com pleno domínio sobre toda a criação. Em segundo lugar, Ele está atento às nossas necessidades. Em terceiro lugar, Ele pode produzir uma grande colheita através dos elementos mais mundanos de nossas vidas. Tudo o que é necessário é que estejamos dispostos a fazer o que Ele nos pede e que tenhamos fé. À medida que entramos no tempo comum, pode parecer que os sinais da glória de Deus desaparecem com a retirada das decorações da época do Natal, mas nada poderia estar mais longe da verdade. A glória de Deus permanece entre nós e sua manifestação brilha através dos acontecimentos de nossa vida diária. Não é como se Deus fosse menos Emmanuel, Deus conosco, fora da época do Natal. Portanto, tenham fé, voltem-se para o Senhor quando o vinho acabar nos vários aspectos de sua vida, e acima de tudo façam o que Ele lhes disser! - Pe. Carlos

Holy Days of obligation note important events in the life of Christ, the Virgin Mary and the Church and they are days on which Catholics are required to go to Mass unless health or another serious reason prevents it. 

Note: Some Holy Days when they fall on a Saturday or a Monday are not observed on that year as a holy day of obligation. Though it is still good to observe them and if possible, to go to Mass on that day. 

Os dias de preceito marcam acontecimentos importantes na vida de Jesus, da Virgem Maria e da Igreja e são dias em que os católicos tem obrigação de ir à missa, a menos que a saúde ou outra razão grave o impeçam.

Nota: Alguns dias de preceito, quando caem em um sábado ou segunda-feira, não são celebrados nesse ano como um dia preceito. Embora ainda é bom observá-los e, se possível, ir à missa nesse dia.
