Dear Friend,
Today, our nation pauses to remember the life and mission of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. More than a federal holiday giving another day off (for some) in the calendar, today is a day of reflection and recommitment toward justice.
A practitioner of justice commits to peace in the same way that a doctor commits to "do no harm." Disintegrated and reactive responses can perpetuate injury and undermine the vision set by Dr. King. A comprehensive vision includes racial equality, gender equality, protecting the vulnerable, both unborn and terminally ill, supporting immigrants, ending discrimination against persons who are LGBTQ+ and providing fair treatment for the economically disadvantaged. The Reign of God imagined by Jesus and promoted by Dr. King is one where no one gets left behind.
A commitment to justice includes admitting that we cannot do everything. We can only change the things that we can change, which underscores the importance of simple actions centered on those around us.
Today is a day of hope that we can and will make a positive difference in our world by emulating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
