His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.” (From John 2:1-11)
The wine has run out. The newly wedded couple is about to feel the shame of that faux pas. But, our Mother Mary steps in on their behalf. She tells Jesus to come to the rescue (which he does)…and, like a good mother, she’s still doing the same thing for us today! She speaks to Jesus for us and, just like that day in Cana, he is moved by her call to action on our behalf. But Mary is also speaking to us today in the words, “Do whatever he tells you.” Those words to the waiters are also words for us! When Jesus says, “love one another, turn the other cheek, pray for your enemies, feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, serve one another” and so on, these aren’t just suggestions but words we are to put into action! “Do whatever he tells you” my sisters and brothers in Christ and peace and love will reign here on earth and in Heaven! Amen
