U.S Bishops Migration Chairman Addresses Future of Immigration Reform
On December 21, 2021, Bishop Mario Dorsonville, chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on Migration, issued a statement expressing the Catholic bishops’ hope for immigration reform in the upcoming year.
For decades the Catholic Church in the United States has called for immigration reform, elevating the importance of family unity and human dignity, among other considerations. The bishops have frequently been at the forefront of these efforts. Unfortunately, immigration reform has fallen victim to a growing partisan divide. Meanwhile, millions of undocumented immigrants and their families remain vulnerable while waiting for a permanent political solution—in many cases, for decades. Given this, the Church’s consistent moral voice is essential for providing direction and promoting positive change. This report highlights some of the key issues at play in immigration and how the Church remains a leader in calling for immigration reform.
Take the "Pledge to Be Love" this Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
National Holiday!
The 2022 MLK Celebration focus articulates the vision of Dr. King of a world of justice, peace, and equality for all mankind. The focus for 2022 causes one to pause and come to the realization that change starts with each of us – shifting priorities and ensuring we are living out the values and virtues that make up the word “Me.” in the King Center’s graphic depiction.
To celebrate The Dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, let us examine our consciences and commit to be part of the change to ensure there will be the realization of a Beloved Community for generations to come!
We have endured much and continue to push forward as a community! Let us move to be part of a more inclusive, loving and accepting community; let us be part of the solution not enablers or perpetuators of the problems!
I acknowledge three things:
- The violence, oppression, inequity, injustice, and hate in our world has to stop.
- I have a responsibility and role to play in creating social change for a more just, humane, equitable, and peaceful world.
- The decision is mine whether to do nothing in this moment, or to have the courage to stand up for justice and I have made my decision.
Starting today, I make a personal choice to BE LOVE.
- I pledge to speak the truth to power in love.
- I pledge to focus on defeating injustice and not destroying the person.
- I pledge to support leaders who demonstrate a love for humanity.
- I pledge to promote unity and refuse to perpetuate or magnify division.
- I pledge to demonstrate a life of courage, care, and compassion as I boldly confront anything that stands in opposition to love.
By taking this pledge, I’m helping to create what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. called THE BELOVED COMMUNITY.
