Catholic’s Rule, Regulation, Rite, Obligation, Dispensation…
Then he [Jesus] said to them, “The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath. That is why the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath.” (Mk 2:27-28)
Have you ever questioned why a car’s GPS system keeps telling the driver when to turn right or left? Is it providing guidance or giving a rule? Unfortunately, there are folks who believe that all Catholic beliefs are only about rules and regulations. It is not necessarily true! We were not created for the sake of rule, regulation, rite and ritual. We are created in the image and likeness of God and are sacred both in physical and spiritual nature. We are distinct from all other forms of life, since we alone are imprinted with the very image of its Creator. We need to be protected, fed and nourished so that we can grow in virtue and wisdom. Rule, regulation, rite and ritual are rich gifts to us from God so that we may have life in Him and enjoy our friendship. Like the seat belt rule, it is there to protect and and save the life of the driver and all those who are in the vehicle. How many times have you heard people say “Thank God! The seat belt saved my life” after a major accident? To feel obligated to attend Mass, participate in reconciliation or other rites and rituals is to miss the entire point of the sanctifying grace in which the Sacraments offer us. These occasions are gifts from God; they are supports to living the faith and growing in God's love. They are rich opportunities for growth, solace and support for all God's people. God is so loving, and as our Father in heaven, He knows what we want and gives us all that we need. When we desire His grace, He will answer this desire of our heart every time! Don’t waste the opportunity!
Lord, awaken in me the desire for You today and always. You are my nourishment, comfort, and help.
Hail Mary full of grace…
