PRAYER FOR LIFE PRAYER GROUP
Beginning Sunday, January 23, 2022
The Respect Life group of Church of St. Michael is leading an effort to pray for the Supreme Court justices as they decide two important cases (see below for more information). These cases are the best chance in nearly 50 years to put an end to federal support of abortion and to rescind support for Roe v. Wade. Beginning Sunday, January 23, 2022, between the 8:00AM and 10:30AM Masses, the chapel is being reserved for people who want to come to pray for the justices to rule for life from conception to natural death and against the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. We will begin at 9:15AM with a prayer to focus our attention and then say a ‘Life’ rosary. Individual prayer/adoration will be encouraged until 10:15. Drop in for all or part of the prayer time.
This prayer time will be held every week until release of the Supreme court opinion.
Background:
The two important cases being reviewed by the Supreme Court December 2021 through June 2022 are Dobbs v. Jackson and Doe v. Bolton. Dobbs v. Jackson is the Mississippi law banning most abortions after 15 weeks (this is later than most European countries have). Dobbs highlights the error of the Court’s viability standard that was used in the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973 which has allowed abortion on demand in all 50 states.
Doe v. Bolton is about the definition of maternal health. Doe v. Bolton was about a Georgia law which permitted abortion only in cases of rape, severe fetal deformity, or the possibility of severe or fatal injury to the mother.
“Dobbs poses the best opportunity in decades to revisit some of the court’s most contentious precedents and modernize U.S. abortion law, which currently allows unlimited abortion up to birth under Roe v. Wade and the all-encompassing definition of maternal health imposed by its companion case, Doe v. Bolton.” (source: Modernize U.S. abortion law — and return abortion policy to the democratic process, By Marjorie Dannenfelser on Nov 29, 2021 at 6:59 pm)
