My dear parishioners,

Back in December I was heading to the doctor’s office for an appointment. As I approached the office building I realized that I had forgotten to bring a mask. I knew they would probably have some at the visitor entrance, but since I was early for the appointment I decided to head to Wal Mart to buy a box for myself. After an unsuccessful search, I asked someone working there where the masks were. He told me they were all out. They were flying off the shelves as fast as they could stock them. I thanked him and turned to leave. Then he stopped me and told me to follow him. He led me out of the store to his own car where he gave me some masks from his own supply. I was stunned at his kindness and generosity. He dropped what he was doing to help a stranger he had just met. Truly a shining example of being Christ in the world.

As I have reflected on this encounter I am reminded of St. Paul’s words to the Corinthians. Even though we are many and different, we are all one body in Christ. All the parts of the body should have the same concern for one another. I experienced that in a very concrete way in a Wal Mart parking lot. I am trying hard to retrain my brain to follow that example. The next person I am tempted to see as an interruption to my day may actually be my next mission from God. I pray that we can all have that same concern for everyone we meet.
