Third Sunday in Ordinary Time (C)
January 23, 2022
“Do not be saddened this day, for rejoicing in the Lord must be your strength.” (Nehemiah 8:10)
Have you ever felt anxious, fearful, or embarrassed and been comforted by someone who spoke the words you needed to hear? Has a respected acquaintance ever offered meaningful praise, giving you a boost of confidence? Perhaps you’ve heard a song or a poem whose text captured your exact feelings, and you might even have been inspired to share these words with others.
Words matter. We have long known that they can raise us up or cut us down, give us joy or cause us pain. We seek the right words for consolation, delight, wisdom, and friendship. How wonderful it is that the word of God is with us, giving us the strength and peace we need!
The scriptures this week call us to celebrate, embrace, and follow the word of God. In the first reading, Ezra encourages the assembly to rejoice in the word of the Lord. The Psalm proclaims that the Lord’s words are Spirit and life, they are perfect, true, and just. In Luke’s Gospel, Christ reads a passage to those who came to listen, assuring them that on this day, the scripture had been fulfilled in their hearing.
As servants of the Church, we are called to shine the light for others and offer consolation when needed, even while feeling the darkness and yearning for comfort ourselves. It is difficult to give water to others when our own buckets are empty, but here we are gifted with the word of the Lord, a gift that can fill us to overflowing when we make the time to reflect on God’s wisdom. Rejoice in the word of the Lord! Let it give you strength.
Prayer
Dear Lord, our Comfort, our Strength, and our Peace,
Open our ears that we might listen to your voice.
Open our hearts that we might know your love.
May your word be our guide that we might live in service to all.
Shine on us that we might reflect your light for all who seek you.
Amen.
