“When Jesus returned to Capernaum after some days, it became known that he was at home.” (Mark 2:1)

What is home? In the best of worlds, home is roots, a haven, a place of love and laughter, of acceptance and forgiveness. Home is family. What is family? It is husband and wife, father and mother, son and daughter, grandparent, aunt, uncle, cousin. Born into or adopted, members of families are connected by bonds of love, responsibility, caring, respect, sacrifice, and stories. Families are dirty diapers, skinned knees, birthday cakes, baseball games, broken curfews, hugs, kisses, and smiles…in the best of worlds.

In thinking about our relationship with family, how many of us include the role of steward? Jesus tells us that when God joins a man and woman, no one must divide them (Matt. 19:6) Cherishing, guarding, strengthening, growing, renewing—all words signifying care of the marital covenant, the care of a steward. Children are blessed by Jesus’ hand (Matt 19:13) and instructed to honor and obey while their parents are told to teach their children the ways of God. (Eph 6:1-4). Nurture, teach, discipline, love, forgive…these are more stewardship words. Families are God’s most precious gift to us. As with all of God’s gifts our role is caretaker, not owner.

How do we show that we are good stewards of family? One way is to examine our efforts through the familiar stewardship concepts of time, treasure, and talent. In our busy world, the time that we share with our families is as important as the treasure that provides for their material well-being. While we must responsibly feed, clothe, and shelter them, will we choose purchasing the latest electronic game station over playing a game of tag or catch? Time spent with spouses and children in talking, reading, taking a hike, or preparing a leisurely meal is precious indeed. As for talent the obligation is two-fold: to share our own gifts—singing, softball, cooking, carpentry, or gardening while identifying and encouraging the unique gifts of each member.

Of greatest importance is the obligation to teach our children about God, to share our love of Jesus and the Gospel, to be role models of Christian living, to set an example of prayer and participation in the sacraments, to teach forgiveness. If we love our children, we desire their ultimate happiness, eternal life in heaven.

We don’t know exactly why Jesus returned home to Capernaum but we can guess. He went for a home-cooked meal, to share his experiences with his family, to ask advice, to get a hug. Mary helped him to advance in “wisdom and age and favor” (Luke 2:52) so that he could go forth to do the will of the Father. She also welcomed him home. We follow her example of stewardship.

¿Qué es el hogar? En el mejor de los mundos, el hogar son las raíces, un refugio, un lugar de amor y risa, de aceptación y perdón. El hogar es familia. ¿Qué es la familia? Es marido y mujer, padre y madre, hijo e hija, abuelo, tía, tío, primo. Nacidos o adoptados, los miembros de las familias están conectados por lazos de amor, responsabilidad, cuidado, respeto, sacrificio e historias. Las familias son pañales sucios, rodillas rotas, pasteles de cumpleaños, partidos de béisbol, toques de queda rotos, abrazos, besos y sonrisas... en el mejor de los mundos.

Al pensar en nuestra relación con la familia, ¿cuántos de nosotros incluimos el papel de steward? Jesús nos dice que cuando Dios une a un hombre y una mujer, nadie debe separarlos (Mat. 19:6) Cuidar, guardar, fortalecer, crecer, renovar: todas las palabras significan el cuidado del pacto matrimonial, el cuidado de un steward. Los niños son bendecidos por la mano de Jesús (Mateo 19:13) y se les instruye a honrar y obedecer, mientras que a sus padres se les dice que enseñen a sus hijos los caminos de Dios. (Efesios 6:1-4). Nutrir, enseñar, disciplinar, amar, perdonar... estas son más palabras de steward. Las familias son el regalo más preciado de Dios para nosotros. Como, con todos los dones de Dios, nuestro papel es el de cuidador, no el de dueño.

¿Cómo demostramos que somos buenos administradores de la familia? Una forma es examinar nuestros esfuerzos a través de los conceptos familiares de steward de tiempo, tesoro y talento. En nuestro ajetreado mundo, el tiempo que compartimos con nuestras familias es tan importante como el tesoro que proveemos para su bienestar material. Si bien debemos alimentarlos, vestirlos y protegerlos de manera responsable, ¿elegiremos comprar el último videojuego en lugar de jugar a atrapar la pelota? El tiempo que se pasa con los cónyuges y los hijos hablando, leyendo, dando un paseo o preparando una comida sin prisas es realmente precioso. En cuanto al talento, la obligación es doble: compartir nuestros propios dones: canto, sóftball, cocina, carpintería o jardinería mientras identificamos y fomentamos los dones únicos de cada miembro.

De suma importancia es la obligación de enseñar a nuestros hijos acerca de Dios, de compartir nuestro amor por Jesús y el Evangelio, de ser modelos a seguir de la vida cristiana, de dar ejemplo de oración y participación en los sacramentos, de enseñar el perdón. Si amamos a nuestros hijos, deseamos su máxima felicidad, la vida eterna en el cielo.

No sabemos exactamente por qué Jesús regresó a Capernaúm, pero podemos adivinarlo. Fue a comer comida casera, a compartir sus experiencias con su familia, a pedir consejo, a recibir un abrazo. María lo ayudó a avanzar en “sabiduría, gracia y edad” (Lc 2,52) para que pudiera salir a hacer la voluntad del Padre. Ella también le dio la bienvenida a casa. Sigamos su ejemplo de stewardship.
