Pope Francis has announced March 2 as a day of prayer and fasting for war-stricken Ukraine, saying, “I invite everyone to make March 2, Ash Wednesday, a day of fasting for peace. I especially encourage believers to devote themselves intensely to prayer and fasting on that day. May the Queen of Peace preserve the world from the madness of war.”
The Holy Father shared the “great pain” in his heart on account of the situation in Ukraine. He said that world peace is once again under threat by “partisan interests.” He urged political leaders to examine their consciences and realize that God wants his children to be “brothers and not enemies.”
“I ask all the parties involved to refrain from any action that causes even more suffering to the populations, destabilizing coexistence between nations and discrediting international law,” requested the Pope. He urged all people to take up the “weapons of God,” namely, prayer and fasting, to counter the “diabolical senselessness of violence.”
Russian military launched a full-scale attack on Ukraine during the predawn hours of Thursday, February 24.
