Happy Easter, and Blessed Divine Mercy Sunday!   As we celebrate the feast of Divine Mercy, we should stop and reflect on what God’s mercy looks like. Although God clearly desires that all His children be eternally united with Him, making that a reality depends on how willing we are to respond to God’s love and mercy in this life. Our faith teaches us that the way we live and the decisions we make are what sets the path for our eternal destination

It is possible to live a life of perfection which prepares us to directly enter into God’s glory. It is also possible to live a life which is so intentionally turned away from God’s love that it sets us towards an eternal destiny away from God’s glory.  Most of us are probably not on the path away from God’s friendship, but how solidly have we committed ourselves to follow the path towards God’s glory? 

The reality is that apart from Jesus, who is fully divine and fully human, and the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was born without the stain of original sin and thus lived a sinless life, all of us sin in a variety of small and large ways. A further reality of sin is that no matter how private our sin may be, it still sets off ripples which affect those around us, because even the most private sin still is a declaration that we make about how we see our relationship with God and our own dignity, and this will shape how we see others and how we interact with them. Thus, though it may be easy to sin it is much harder, indeed impossible, to pull back the effects set in motion by our sin.

It is in the face of the reality of our sin that God’s mercy intervenes. Some people think that God’s mercy simply covers all our wrongs. However, if God’s mercy were to intervene simply as a superficial covering over of our sin, as Martin Luther mistakenly supposed, that would mean that the darkness of sin is still within us. When we open ourselves to God’s mercy He intervenes in a much deeper and more through way by healing the effects of our sin in our lives and in the lives of others. God’s mercy banishes the darkness from our lives and makes it possible for us to be filled instead with the light of Christ. This gives us the freedom to be identified by our baptismal dignity and not by our sins. God’s mercy heals, forgives, restores and renews. 

The first stage along the path of living the gift of Divine Mercy is to recognize our need for mercy. We should also never tire of asking for God’s mercy. Sometimes as we growth on the path to holiness we may feel tired and embarrassed of having to continually ask forgiveness for a particular sin. However, don’t give up. Remember that some of Jesus’ most powerful words to St. Faustina were that what grieved Him most was not the weight of our sins but rather how little we were willing to trust in His mercy and forgiveness. We need God’s mercy to strengthen us in order to follow Him more freely and faithfully. There should be no shame in asking for a gift that God is yearning to give us.

The second stage of the path of mercy is to recognize how much we’ve been forgiven and to do the same in our relationship with others. When we’re aware of the flaw and sins of others it can be tempting to judge others more harshly than we judge ourselves, but if we are to pray the words of the Our Father with faith and conviction then we had better be sure that we are merciful in our treatment of others. This doesn’t mean that we condone their actions, or that we fail to hold them accountable for what they’ve done, but it does mean that we must always remember the human dignity of others even when they’ve forgotten it themselves. 

Let us celebrate this Divine Mercy Sunday by seeking God’s mercy and by sharing that mercy with others. As we seek God’s mercy, let us pray that just as our sins cast ripples through us into the lives of others, so too the more we seek God’s mercy the more it will cast ripples through us that will transform the lives of those around us. – Fr. Feliz Páscoa e domingo da Divina Misericórdia! Ao celebrarmos a festa da Divina Misericórdia, devemos parar e refletir sobre a misericórdia de Deus. Embora Deus claramente deseje que todos os Seus filhos e filhas estejam eternamente unidos a Ele, tornar isso realidade depende de quão dispostos estamos a responder ao amor e misericórdia de Deus nesta vida. A nossa fé nos ensina que a maneira como vivemos e as decisões que tomamos são o que define o caminho para o nosso destino eterno.

É possível viver uma vida de perfeição que nos prepara para entrar diretamente na glória de Deus. Também é possível viver uma vida tão intencionalmente afastada do amor de Deus que nos leva a um destino eterno longe da glória de Deus. A maioria de nós provavelmente não está se afastando da amizade de Deus, mas com que firmeza estamo-nos comprometendo a seguir o caminho para a glória de Deus?

A realidade é que, exceto Jesus, que é totalmente divino e totalmente humano, e a Santíssima Virgem Maria, que nasceu sem a mancha do pecado original e portanto, viveu uma vida sem pecado, todos nós pecamos de várias maneiras, pequenas e grandes. Outra realidade do pecado é que não importa quão segredo seja o nosso pecado, ele ainda provoca ondulações que afetam aqueles ao nosso redor, porque mesmo o pecado mais privado ainda é uma declaração que fazemos sobre como vemos o nosso relacionamento com Deus e a nossa própria dignidade, e isso moldará a forma como vemos os outros e como interagimos com eles. Assim, embora possa é fácil pecar, é muito mais difícil, na verdade, impossível, retirar os efeitos desencadeados pelo nosso pecado.

É diante da realidade do nosso pecado que a misericórdia de Deus intervém. Algumas pessoas pensam que a misericórdia de Deus simplesmente cobre todos os nossos erros. No entanto, se a misericórdia de Deus interviesse simplesmente como uma cobertura superficial do nosso pecado, como Martinho Lutero supôs erroneamente, isso significaria que a escuridão do pecado ainda está dentro de nós. Quando nos abrimos à misericórdia de Deus, Ele intervém de maneira muito mais profunda e completa, curando os efeitos do nosso pecado nas nossas vidas e na vida dos outros. A misericórdia de Deus bane a escuridão das nossas vidas e torna possível que fiquemos cheios da luz de Cristo. Isso nos dá a liberdade de sermos identificados por nossa dignidade batismal e não por nossos pecados. A misericórdia de Deus cura, perdoa, restaura e renova.

A primeira etapa no caminho de viver o dom da Divina Misericórdia é reconhecer quanto precisamos da misericórdia. Também não devemos nos cansar de pedir a misericórdia de Deus. Às vezes, à medida que crescemos no caminho da santidade, podemos nos sentir cansados e envergonhados de ter que continuamente pedir perdão por um pecado em particular. No entanto, não desista. Lembre algumas das palavras mais poderosas de Jesus a Santa Faustina onde ele diz que o que mais O entristecia não era o peso dos nossos pecados, mas o quão pouco estávamos dispostos a confiar na sua misericórdia e perdão. Precisamos da misericórdia de Deus para nos fortalecer a fim de segui-lo mais livre e fielmente. Não deve haver vergonha em pedir um presente que Deus anseia nos dar. 

A segunda etapa do caminho da misericórdia é reconhecer o quanto já fomos perdoados e então fazer o mesmo no nosso relacionamento com outros. Quando estamos cientes das falhas e pecados dos outros, pode ser tentador julga-os com mais severidade do que julgamos a nós mesmos, mas se vamos orar as palavras do Pai-Nosso com fé e convicção, é melhor ter certeza de que somos misericordiosos no nosso tratamento dos outros. Isso não significa que toleramos as suas ações ou que deixamos de responsabilizá-los pelo que fizeram, mas significa que devemos sempre lembrar a dignidade humana dos outros, mesmo quando eles mesmos a esqueceram. 

Celebremos este domingo da Divina Misericórdia procurando a misericórdia de Deus e compartilhando essa misericórdia com os outros. Ao buscarmos a misericórdia de Deus, oremos para que, assim como os nossos pecados lancem ondas através de nós na vida dos outros, também quanto mais buscamos a misericórdia de Deus, mais ela lance ondas através de nós que transformarão a vida daqueles ao nosso redor. – Pe.
