Happy Easter! Just as our Lenten pilgrimage led us for forty days to reflect on the areas of our life where we still need repentance and conversion, now the fifty days of our Easter celebration invite us to reflect on those places of our life where we need conversion by receiving and accepting the graces and invitations Christ offers us. Thinking about all that Jesus has offered for us, we certainly have much to thank Him for. We offer our gratitude to our Lord by our prayer life and our words of praise, but we also do so most appropriately by the way we live our lives. Saint Peter is an excellent example for us of how what it looks like to go through repentance and conversion and move into living a life of bold discipleship. Just before the Passion of Jesus, Peter promised that he would be by Jesus’ side no matter what. We know how quickly Peter turned from that bold declaration and denied knowing Jesus not because he was afraid of an imminent threat of violence but rather to avoid being the gossip material of a maid who had identified him as part of Jesus' group. Peter's repentance begins when he sees that what Jesus foretold has come to pass, but Peter's conversion does not reach its next stage until after Jesus' resurrection when Jesus gives Peter the opportunity to profess his love three times to match the three times that Peter denied Jesus. Reading the gospel in our modern languages, including English and Portuguese, we do not realize that every time Jesus asks Peter if he loves Him Jesus he is using a different word in Greek. He begins by asking Peter if he loves Him as God loves and He ends by asking if Peter loves him at least as friends love each other. By going down to Peter's level, Jesus makes it possible for Peter to eventually reach higher levels of perfection. Just as Jesus did with Peter, so he does with us. Our sins are not our end. If we are willing to repent Jesus uses the same openness that led us to sin to bring us closer to his grace. 

The fruit of Peter’s conversion is seen in how he becomes a bold proclaimer of the Gospel and how he pours himself out not only in sharing the good news verbally but also through his actions in serving the poor and the needy around him. Jesus invites us to do the same. He invites us to take the graces we receive from our lives of prayer and put them into action. One concrete way I hope that our collaborative can live this out is through the Society of St. Vincent De Paul. The Society has its regional headquarters in Stoughton and for a long time, there was a chapter of the Society at Immaculate Conception parish. My goal is to bring a chapter of the Society of Saint Vincent DePaul back to life in the context of our collaborative. I believe this will provide our community with a further opportunity for prayer and formation as well as another means by which we can serve the needs of those around us. Many of you already support the needs of our brothers and sisters through our St. Anthony’s Free Market. Having a chapter of the Society of St. Vincent De Paul in our collaborative would allow us greater outreach in meeting the needs of others beyond ensuring that they have good food to eat. As your pastor, having the support of the Society would give me the benefit of having your counsel and support in determining how to best use our resources to serve the Body of Christ present in our brothers and sisters. We will have a meeting on Saturday, May 14 at 2:30 pm at Immaculate Conception Church for all of you who are interested in learning more about the society of St. Vincent De Paul. Feliz Páscoa! Assim como nossa peregrinação quaresmal nos levou por quarenta dias a refletir sobre as áreas de nossa vida onde ainda precisamos de arrependimento e conversão, agora os cinquenta dias de nossa celebração da Páscoa nos convidam a refletir sobre aqueles lugares de nossa vida onde precisamos de conversão, recebendo e aceitando as graças e os convites que Cristo nos oferece. Pensando em tudo o que Jesus ofereceu por nós, certamente temos muito a agradecer a Ele. Oferecemos nossa gratidão a nosso Senhor por nossa vida de oração e nossas palavras de louvor, mas também o fazemos mais apropriadamente pela maneira como vivemos nossas vidas. São Pedro é um excelente exemplo para nós de como passamos pelo arrependimento e conversão e isso nos leva a viver uma vida de discipulado forte. Pouco antes da Paixão de Jesus, Pedro prometeu que sempre estaria ao lado de Jesus. Sabemos com que rapidez Pedro abandonou essa declaração ousada e negou conhecer Jesus, não por medo de uma ameaça iminente de violência, mas para evitar ser objeto de fofoca de uma empregada que o identificou como parte do grupo de Jesus. O arrependimento de Pedro começa quando ele vê que o que Jesus predisse aconteceu, mas a conversão de Pedro não atinge seu próximo estágio até depois da ressurreição de Jesus, quando Jesus dá a Pedro a oportunidade de declarar seu amor três vezes para igualar as três vezes que Pedro negou a Jesus. Lendo o evangelho em nossas línguas modernas, incluindo português e inglês, não percebemos que cada vez que Jesus pergunta a Pedro se ele o ama, Jesus usa uma palavra diferente em grego. Ele começa perguntando a Pedro se ele o ama como Deus ama e termina perguntando se Pedro o ama pelo menos como amigos amam uns aos outros. Descendo ao nível de Pedro, Jesus torna possível que Pedro eventualmente alcance níveis mais elevados de perfeição. Assim como Jesus fez com Pedro, ele faz conosco. Nossos pecados não são nosso fim. Se estamos dispostos a nos arrepender, Jesus usa a mesma abertura que nos levou ao pecado para nos aproximar de sua graça. O fruto da conversão de Pedro é visto em como ele se torna um audaz proclamador do Evangelho e como ele se derrama não apenas na partilha verbal das boas novas, mas também através de suas ações no serviço aos pobres e necessitados ao seu redor. Jesus nos convida a fazer o mesmo. Ele nos convida a tomar as graças que recebemos em nossas vidas de oração e colocá-las em ação. Uma maneira concreta que espero que nossa colaborativa possa viver isso é através da Sociedade de São Vicende de Paulo. A Sociedade tem sua sede regional em Stoughton e, por muito tempo, houve um capítulo da Sociedade na paróquia da Imaculada Conceição. Meu objetivo é establecer um capítulo da Sociedade de São Vicente de Paulo na nossa colaborativa. Acredito que isso proporcionará à nossa comunidade mais uma oportunidade de oração e formação, bem como outro meio pelo qual podemos atender às necessidades daqueles que nos rodeiam. Muitos de vocês já apóiam as necessidades de nossos irmãos e irmãs através do nosso St. Anthony's Free Market. Ter um capítulo da Sociedade de São Vicente de Paulo em nossa colaborativa nos permitiria um maior alcance no atendimento das necessidades dos outros, além de garantir que eles tenham boa comida para comer. Como seu paroco, ter o apoio da Sociedade me daria o benefício de ter seu conselho e apoio para determinar a melhor forma de usar nossos recursos para servir o Corpo de Cristo presente em nossos irmãos e irmãs.
