Thursday, May 5 is the National Day of Prayer. We are grateful to live in the United States where we have elected representatives who help to promote the common good, though I know, it doesn't always feel that our elected officials have the best interest of the poor and the marginalized on their radar. Maybe May 5 is a good day to pray for a reawakening of working for the common good through compromise and fair policies that promote justice and peace. Here is a prayer that might help if you can't find the words:
God of love and peace, "we are so grateful to be living in a democracy where many play a part in making sure the needs and desires of the nation’s citizens are heard and met. As our leaders work together to find solutions to difficult problems, we ask that You guide them to speak respectfully and with humility to one another. Help them to show Christ-like love to those they interact with and be an advocate for their constituents and others.
And Lord, we thank You for leaders who care about issues impacting the most vulnerable. We ask that You help all leaders to care for people in need, especially children. Press on the hearts of constituents a desire and drive to reach out to their government leaders on issues surrounding global poverty, and soften leaders’ hearts toward these issues." In Jesus' name we pray. Amen
