Happy Easter! The fourth Sunday of Easter is celebrated as Good Shepherd Sunday. This is an opportunity for us to reflect on Jesus’ role as the Good Shepherd, and on how this role continues to be carried out in the life of the Church. Our Christian journey flows out of developing our relationship with our Shepherd. God has not made us spiritual robots that automatically follow His will in lockstep. Neither has he made us absolutely free so that we can do whatever we please without negative results or consequences. God has given us free will, but this is a freedom of excellence rather than one of indifference. Freedom of indifference believes that all paths are created equal and that God approves of whatever we may do. Freedom of excellence believes that God has created us each with a particular plan and purpose in mind, and the freedom we have is in choosing those things which will guide us more fruitfully down that path.

With this in mind, we recognize that our first and constant mission is to allow ourselves to be formed so that we are able to hear the voice of the Shepherd. That’s where the Church’s constant call to conversion and repentance comes in. We’re surrounded by many voices that invite us to go in varied directions. These invitations often lead us away from communion with the Good Shepherd. The good news is that the Shepherd will never stop calling and seeking after us, but at the same time, He will never force us to follow after Him. The choice is ours and we must choose well.  Listen and follow where the Lord leads. He may lead us through rough terrain but He always brings us to greener pastures.

As we recognize that we are called by the Good Shepherd we also recognize that we all share the responsibility of spreading His call to others. God calls certain members of His flock to be ordained as priests and so to share His ministry in a specific sacramental way. We must pray for our priests. We must prayer that they are shepherds after God’s heart, recognizing that the role they exercise is not a personal privilege but rather a gift which God has entrusted to them for the benefit of His people. We must also pray that God continues to call more men to follow in their footsteps. My home parish of St. Joseph-St. Lazarus in East Boston has had a track record of producing a priestly ordination every fifteen years. I was ordained in 2011 and I recently heard the good news that the next seminary candidate is currently in the application process. There is no reason why our Catholic parishes in Stoughton cannot produce the same or better numbers of priestly vocations. Stoughton has already produced several priests, and I am fully convinced that God is currently calling some of His sons in our parishes to serve the Body of Christ in this way. We must do our part to pray and support them in discerning this call. 

At the same time, the call to follow the invitation of the Good Shepherd is not just the call to ordained ministry. By our baptism, we all share in what we call the common priesthood of the faithful. Each of us has a role in building up and tending to God’s kingdom. We do this in three ways. First, we must make sure that we discover our path and follow it. Second, we must encourage others along their own paths within the Church. Lastly, mindful of those who have strayed or those who have never heard the voice of the Good Shepherd we must never tire of seeking them out and inviting them to follow Jesus and His Church. Let us pray that we always remain faithful to following the voice of the Good Shepherd and that our witness and invitation may bring many more into the fold. – Fr. Carlos

Feliz Páscoa! O quarto domingo da Páscoa é celebrado como o domingo do Bom Pastor. Esta é uma oportunidade para refletirmos sobre o papel de Jesus como Bom Pastor e sobre como esse papel continua a mover a vida da Igreja. A nossa jornada cristã flui do desenvolvimento do nosso relacionamento com o Bom Pastor. Deus não nos fez robôs espirituais que seguem automaticamente a sua vontade. Tampouco nos fez absolutamente livres para que possamos fazer o que quisermos sem resultados ou consequências negativas. Deus nos deu o livre arbítrio, mas esta é uma liberdade de excelência e não de indiferença. A liberdade da indiferença acredita que todos os caminhos são criados iguais e que Deus aprova tudo o que fazemos. A liberdade de excelência acredita que Deus criou cada um de nós com um plano e propósito particular em mente, e a liberdade que temos é para escolher as coisas que nos guiarão de forma mais frutífera nesse caminho.

Com isso em mente, reconhecemos que a nossa primeira e constante missão é deixar-nos formar para que melhor pousamos ouvir a voz do Bom Pastor. É aí que entra o constante chamado da Igreja à conversão e ao arrependimento. Estamos cercados por muitas vozes que nos convidam a ir em várias direções. Esses convites muitas vezes nos afastam da comunhão com o Bom Pastor. A boa notícia é que o Bom Pastor nunca deixará de nos chamar e buscar por nós, mas, ao mesmo tempo, Ele nunca nos forçará a segui-Lo. A escolha é nossa e devemos escolher bem. Ouça e siga aonde o Senhor leva. Ele pode nos guiar por terrenos rochosos, mas sempre nos leva a onde estão os pastos mais verdes.

Ao reconhecermos que somos chamados pelo Bom Pastor, também reconhecemos que todos compartilhamos a responsabilidade de espalhar o seu chamado aos outros. Deus chama certos membros do seu rebanho para serem ordenados sacerdotes e assim compartilharem o seu ministério de uma maneira sacramental específica. Devemos rezar pelos nossos sacerdotes. Devemos rezar para que sejam pastores segundo o coração de Deus, reconhecendo que o papel que exercem não é um privilégio pessoal, é um dom que Deus lhes confiou para o benefício do seu povo. Devemos também rezar para que Deus continue a chamar mais homens para seguir os seus passos. A paróquia onde cresci, St. Joseph-St. Lazarus no East Boston, tem produzido uma ordenação sacerdotal a cada quinze anos. Fui ordenado em 2011 e recentemente ouvi a boa notícia de que o próximo candidato está no processo de fazer aplicação. Não há razão pela qual as nossas paróquias católicas de Stoughton não possam produzir uma mesma, ou melhor quantidade de vocações. Stoughton já produziu várias vocações sacerdotais, e estou plenamente convencido de que Deus atualmente está chamando alguns dos seus filhos nas nossas paróquias para servir ao Corpo de Cristo dessa maneira. Devemos fazer a nossa parte para orar e apoiá-los no discernimento desse chamado.

Ao mesmo tempo, o chamado para seguir o convite do Bom Pastor não é so o chamado para o ministério ordenado. Pelo nosso batismo, todos participamos do que chamamos o sacerdócio comum dos fiéis. Cada um de nós tem um papel na edificação e cuidado do reino de Deus. Fazemos isso de três maneiras. Primeiro, devemos ter certeza de que descobrimos o nosso caminho e o seguimos. No segundo lugar, devemos encorajar os outros ao longo dos seus próprios caminhos dentro da Igreja. Por fim, temos que estar atentos aos que se extraviaram ou aos que nunca ouviram a voz do Bom Pastor, e não podemos deixar de procurá-los e convidá-los a seguir Jesus e a sua Igreja. Rezemos para que permaneçamos sempre fiéis a seguir a voz do Bom Pastor e que o nosso testemunho e convite possa trazer muitos mais ao rebanho. – Pe. Carlos

Over the past few months, we have been working hard to clean up Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. We know that it is a place many go to seeking to connect with their loved ones who have died and also seeking a place of prayer and welcome. We also know that over the years it has become somewhat of an eyesore. There are many improvements that still need to be made, but we hope you're already noticing a difference. 

Our efforts at making improvements make it all the more frustrating when we have incidents like we did this weekend when someone selfishly decided to dump their above-ground pool along with TVs at our Cemetery. The dumpster at the cemetery is not a public dumpster, we have decided to lock the dumpster moving forward.  If you are the person who dumped this garbage or you know who did it I hope you'll consider making a donation to help further improve our cemetery.

Please help us with trying to keep our cemetery clean and safe if you see something say something. With your support, we can keep improving Holy Sepulchre Cemetery and ensure that it is a place of prayer and consolation and not an eyesore.
