Day 4 of Lent: Why do we call it Lent?
The English word for Lent comes from the Anglo-Saxon word "Lencten" meaning "Spring." This signifies the time period in which Lent and Easter fall. The English word Lent can also be derived from the Old German word of "Lenzin" meaning "long," and refers to the "lengthening of days."
Some historians interpret this as the days lengthening as Spring approaches, and can also be applied to our attempt to "lengthen" our spirituality during Lent, a time when we try to grow in our faith and dedication to our Lord.
