I am the Bread of Life
At this time each year, we hear and are asked to pray for those preparing to receive their First Holy Communion, as our Second graders will be doing this coming Sunday. So this life-changing event always brings to memory my First Communion, which was April 1, 1973. Next year will be my 50th Anniversary! I don't remember the exact moment I received Jesus in the Holy Eucharist for the first time; however, I remember standing in my family's kitchen, which had painted pale yellow walls, wearing my white dress, tights, and shoes. I didn't wear a veil but a cute white headband. The sun was shining brightly through the kitchen window that faced East, and it was a warm day! Since it was the Easter Season, there was a fragrant Easter lily on the kitchen table. I had the feeling of intense joy and excitement in anticipation of receiving Jesus! One of my First Communion gifts was a clear-cut glass beaded Rosary, which now hangs on the crucifix over my bed. I don't use that particular rosary anymore since I had to repair it a few times (probably praying too hard); however, my family has been instructed to put it in my hands when I am finally laid to rest.
Today's gospel reading is taken from Jesus' 'Bread of Life Discourse.' St. Johns' Gospel, Chapter 6 is jam-packed with bread images! After the multiplication of the loaves and fishes and the feeding of the 5000, the people were looking for Jesus. The people were more interested in having him fill their earthly needs rather than their Eternal needs. Jesus gives himself as the 'Bread of Life.' This teaching had a difficult message, and many walked away, including some of his followers. The Real Presence is still a stumbling block for some today.
Our Wednesday Worship song is I Am the Bread of Life by Sister Suzanne Toolan. Sister composed this song back in 1966, shortly after Vatican II. The lyrics are filled with scripture taken out of John's Gospel, Chapter 6. My favorite part of the lyrics is "and I will raise you up on the last day," which brings much joy and hope!My prayer for you is to remember and reminisce your First Holy Communion and share those memories with those around you. And something that I will remember is what Father Jim told those who received their First Communion at the Easter Vigil. He told them to receive Jesus as if it were their first time (which it was for them), as if it were their only time, and as if it were their last time. This idea gave me the feeling of how precious this gift is, which is something for all of us to remember when receiving communion.
