The bishops of the California Catholic Conference, including Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone, have issued a statement in response to the leaked Dobbs ruling and California's response. After the draft ruling was leaked, suggesting that Roe v. Wade would be overturned, Governor Newsom, Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, and Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins
issued a statement vowing to enshrine abortion into the state constitution.
The California bishops' response stated that this move would destroy lives and called for "the Church and its 12 million Catholics to engage with their communities, actively and publicly oppose this amendment, and fulfill our baptismal responsibility to protect life at every stage, and at every opportunity."
The Migrants and Refugees Section was founded in 2017 by Pope Francis after his visit to Lampedusa and Lesbos "to support those who are forcibly displaced by conflict, natural disaster, persecution or extreme poverty; and those who fall victim to human trafficking."
