The Mass readings during the Easter season are all taken from the New Testament. In these readings, we see the reactions of Jesus’ apostles and disciples to His resurrection and we see how their encounters with the risen Jesus move them to profound conversions. The disciples are transformed into bold proclaimers that share the good news with zeal and conviction. In their witness to the power of Jesus’ name, these once fearful disciples are strengthened to the point of being able to set aside their concern for how others may react and they’re willing to endure many types of suffering and persecution along the way. 

The disciples are so transformed from their earlier way of life by their encounters with the risen Jesus that we may even forget that these were the same followers who had run away from Jesus during his passion and had denied even knowing Him. We may marvel at their transformation, but the path of transformation they went through is rather straightforward. Jesus comes to meet them. In His presence, they are faced with their failings and their weakness. Yet, in Jesus, the disciples find no judgment or condemnation. Instead, they find redemptive love and the light of Christ which allows them to step out of the darkness of sorrow and into the light of truth. 

            Today’s Gospel underscores this point by reminding us of Judas and how starkly his journey contrasts with that of the other apostles. As I’ve mentioned before, we’re used to thinking of Judas as almost a bogeyman figure. However, it’s not as if the eleven were perfect and Judas was the only one that was flawed. The gospels repeatedly highlight the flaws and brokenness of many of the apostles. In fact, throughout the gospels, among the apostles, it’s only John, the beloved, who manages to remain steadfastly by Jesus’ side. Yet even John is not a perfect figure, he’s just one of the least flawed. What sets Judas apart then from the others then is not the depth of his sin but rather that He didn’t trust in Jesus’ ability to forgive and restore him. The other apostles brought their brokenness to the light of Christ but, as the line which precedes this Sunday’s gospel passage notes, Judas did the opposite and went out into the darkness.  

            We also often find ourselves in this struggle between light and darkness. We know our sins, and our temptation can be either to blow our sins out of proportion to the point that what we’ve done is beyond the scope of what God will forgive, or the temptation can be to minimize our sins or hide them away. However, whatever we keep in darkness is also prevented from receiving Christ’s light. We may fear that if we admit our brokenness then Jesus will condemn us outright, but He knows us as we are, works in progress. Judgment for our actions, for the things we’ve done or have failed to do, will happen at the end of our lives as we stand before God’s glorious throne, but while we live Jesus will always continue to seek us out as He did with the original apostles after His resurrection. When we come to Jesus what we find is not condemnation but rather divine love that calls us out of darkness and into God’s marvelous light.  His love may call us to change and grow in unexpected ways, as it did for the apostles, but if we’re willing to do this then like the apostles, we will find that our lives will become more joyful and fruitful than we could have imagined.  – Fr. As leituras da Missa durante o tempo pascal são todas tiradas do Novo Testamento. Nessas leituras vemos as reações dos apóstolos e discípulos de Jesus à Sua ressurreição e vemos como os seus encontros com Jesus ressuscitado os movem a profundas conversões. Os discípulos são transformados em proclamadores ousados que compartilham a boa nova com zelo e convicção. No seu testemunho do poder do nome de Jesus, esses discípulos outrora temerosos são fortalecidos a ponto de serem capazes de deixar de lado a sua preocupação com a forma como os outros podem reagir e também estão dispostos a suportar muitos tipos de sofrimento e perseguição ao longo do caminho.

Os discípulos são tão transformados do seu modo de vida anterior por seus encontros com Jesus ressuscitado que podemos até esquecer que eles são os mesmos seguidores que fugiram de Jesus durante a sua paixão. Podemos nos maravilhar com a transformação deles, mas o caminho de transformação pelo qual eles passaram é bastante direto. Jesus vem ao seu encontro. Na sua presença eles são confrontados com as suas falhas e as suas fraquezas. No entanto, em Jesus os discípulos não encontram julgamento ou condenação. Em vez disso, eles encontram o amor redentor e a luz de Cristo que lhes permite sair das trevas da tristeza e entrar na luz da verdade.

O Evangelho de hoje ressalta esse ponto, lembrando-nos de Judas e como a sua jornada contrasta com a dos outros apóstolos. Como tenho mencionado antes, estamos acostumados a pensar em Judas quase como uma figura de monstro. No entanto, não é como se os onze fossem perfeitos e Judas fosse o único que falhou. Os evangelhos repetidamente destacam as falhas e o quebrantamento de muitos dos apóstolos. De fato, ao longo dos evangelhos, entre os apóstolos é apenas João, o discípulo amado, que consegue permanecer firme ao lado de Jesus. No entanto, mesmo João não é uma figura perfeita, ele é apenas um dos menos falhos. O que diferencia Judas dos outros não é a profundidade do seu pecado, mas sim que ele não confiou na capacidade de Jesus de perdoá-lo e restaurá-lo. Os outros apóstolos trouxeram o seu quebrantamento à luz de Cristo, mas, como observa a linha que precede a passagem do evangelho deste domingo, Judas fez o oposto e saiu para as trevas.

Muitas vezes também nos encontramos nessa luta entre a luz e as trevas. Conhecemos os nossos pecados, e a nossa tentação pode ser ver os nossos pecados duma maneira desproporcional onde os achamos maiores que o perdão de Deus, ou os minimizamos e desejamos escondê-los. No entanto, tudo o que mantemos nas trevas também fica fora de receber a luz de Cristo. Podemos temer que, se admitirmos o nosso quebrantamento, Jesus nos condenará completamente, mas Ele conhece-nos como somos, obras em andamento. O julgamento por nossas ações, pelas coisas que fizemos ou deixamos de fazer, acontecerá no final das nossas vidas quando estivermos diante do trono glorioso de Deus, mas enquanto vivermos, Jesus sempre continuará a nos buscar como fez com os apóstolos originais após da Sua ressurreição. Quando vamos a Jesus, o que encontramos não é condenação, mas amor divino que nos chama das trevas para a maravilhosa luz de Deus. O seu amor pode nos chamar a mudar e crescer de maneiras inesperadas, como aconteceu com os apóstolos, mas se estivermos dispostos a seguir o exemplo dos apóstolos, descobriremos que as nossas vidas se tornarão mais alegres e frutíferas do que poderíamos ter imaginado. – Pe.
