Love is difficult. Especially the kind of love John talks about in the Gospel today. John doesn’t paint a sentimental view of love; he tells of the type of love that is shown through sacrifice and service.
We see this type of love lived in the witness of the martyrs, and in the example of the lives of the saints. We see it in the holy men and women who have answered the call to live out their lives for Jesus, and we see it in the lives of parents and families who sacrifice for their children and loved ones.
Jesus knew that the disciples would be called upon to follow his way of love even unto death. That's why He didn't just tell them how to love, He showed them. In his acts of healing and forgiving, at the Last Supper as he washed his disciples' feet, in the gift of the Eucharist, and through his Passion and Death on the Cross, He modeled the kind of love he commands of us.
The type of love Jesus modeled for us is difficult and involves sacrifice. It is not just words, but words that are backed up by actions. There are times when it is difficult to show love to friends and family when we aren’t getting along. It’s not always easy to choose love when faced with hatred and anger.
Yet, because of love, the glory of God is fully revealed in Jesus. In the love we have for one another—difficult, challenging, sacrificial love—we find Jesus and glorify Him.
Thank you to all who volunteered and sacrificed their time and talent to make our faith formation year a success.
