Dear St. Francis of Assisi Parish family,
We are deeply saddened to announce the death of JoAnn (Jody) Mettler Bosnick, beloved wife of Director of Social Concerns and Adult Faith Formation Anthony Bosnick, on Sunday, May 15, at Georgetown University Hospital. Jody, 71, is the loving mother of Joe (Ashley), Rosie, Matthew (Lindsey) and Daniel (Katie); grandmother of Audrey, Eleanor, Madeline, James, Henry and Arthur; and sister of Patrick Mettler, Jeanne Mettler, Meg Wormley, Sally Joyce and Suzanne Mettler.
Jody was born and raised in Copake Falls in Upstate New York, where she was active in country and farm life. Her father owned a dairy farm and was a local veterinarian. Her mother founded and edited the local newspaper. The second child of six, Jody loved family gatherings on the hillside of the family farm and reunited with her siblings whenever possible.
While in high school, Jody volunteered one summer at Camphill Village in nearby Copake, where she enjoyed working with people with special needs. It set the direction of her life. She majored in special education at St. Joseph College in West Hartford, CT, and was hired by Montgomery County to teach elementary school-aged students with special needs. After marrying and having her children, she taught at local Catholic schools, including Mother of God School in Gaithersburg and St. Raphael School in Rockville, from which she retired in 2021.
Jody served for many years in the Mother of God community and local Catholic parishes, including St. John Neumann Parish. She served families of children in the parish religious education program and as a Eucharistic Minister in a local nursing home.
Her true joy was spent with her family and friends. She enjoyed cooking Thanksgiving dinner, with her legendary stuffing. She enjoyed visiting and Facetiming her six grandchildren. Jody supported her four children in good times and bad and was an immovable rock on which they depended. She was known to proudly wear a sweatshirt that said, “I may not look tough, but I raised a Marine.” She was her children’s biggest fan in all their endeavors.
She never lost her love of country life in Copake Falls, and in light of that, she will be buried in New St. Bridget’s Cemetery, her parish cemetery at Our Lady of Hope Church.
Friends may call at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 9000 Warfield Road, in Gaithersburg from 2-4 pm Thursday, May 19, and from 10:30-11:30 am Friday, May 20, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be offered at 11:30 am Friday. The interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the
Shady Grove Pregnancy Center,
Catholic Relief Services, or the charity of one’s choice.
May Jody rest in peace with all her friends in Heaven. The Parish Office will be closed from 10:30 am-2:30 pm Friday, May 20, so that staff may attend the visitation and funeral Mass.
Peace in Christ,
St. Francis of Assisi Parish Staff
