Aren't we all looking for a little bit or a lotta bit of peace these days? Russia is waging war in Ukraine, Covid is still waging its own war on the unvaccinated and immune compromised, racially motivated murders are news yet again, the west is on fire and water is scarce there, and the TV talking heads argue and divide our nation down every line possible. These things trouble our hearts and make us fearful. They make us question God's love and where he is in all of this hard scary stuff!
The same was true of the time when Jesus said these words to his disciples. Their land was occupied by the Romans and violence, poverty, disease, and lack of autonomy and freedom were part of their every day lives. Good people struggled to make a life for themselves and their families. They certainly didn't deserve the hardships that they faced.
And in this piece of Scripture, Jesus is telling his disciples that he is leaving them! "What the heck?! You just came back to us, and you are leaving AGAIN?!" BUT he is not leaving them alone. He gives them the peace of the Good News; that love always wins, that life conquers death. In next Sunday's Gospel Jesus tells his disciples that he will be with them always and then Pentecost happens and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit comes to dwell not just among them but within them! God as close to them as their very breath... don't be afraid, I am with you...
Think about whatever is troubling you right in this very moment. Imagine Jesus offering you his peace and saying these words to YOU as you breathe deeply, "Do not let your heart be troubled, do not be afraid. I am with you."
Repeat as needed.
