This past Thursday we celebrated the Solemnity of the Ascension. This Solemnity is confusing to some because in the Archdiocese of Boston, along with six other dioceses in the US it is a holy day of obligation but in many other places, the observance of this solemnity has been transferred to this Sunday, which we in the Archdiocese of Boston celebrate as the Seventh Sunday of Easter. The transfer of this solemnity is often done for practical reasons, but I think the Archdiocese of Boston, and other places where the Ascension is observed on Thursday, exercise great wisdom in celebrating the solemnity on the traditional day. It may be challenging to stop our weekly routines and make time to get to Mass, but such moments remind us that the practice of faith is not a matter of convenience but rather an opportunity to stretch ourselves to be more generous in offering our time and talents to God. Next year the Solemnity of the Ascension falls on Thursday, May 18. Mark your calendars.

            Keeping the Solemnity of the Ascension on Thursday also provides us with an opportunity to reflect on both the readings for the solemnity as well as the readings for the Seventh Sunday of Easter. These two sets of readings help to prepare us for the next few weekends which contain a plentiful abundance of powerhouse celebrations. During the next three Sundays, we will celebrate the Solemnities of Pentecost, The Holy Trinity, and Corpus Christi (The Precious Body and Blood of Christ.) These three solemnities each give us a rich insight into the life of the Church and into our individual Christian lives. The Solemnity of the Ascension begins to set the tone for these celebrations. 

The Ascension commemorates the ending of Jesus’ post-resurrection time with His disciples. This moment is not the end of Jesus’ work on earth; it is rather the time this work is transformed. Up until this point, the disciples were receiving Jesus’ teaching and His grace. They were going forth and beginning to share the good news, but it is after the Ascension and particularly after Pentecost that their mission changes in character and intensity. It now becomes clear that to be members of the Body of Christ is not a metaphorical expression nor is it a pious way of expressing the relationship between a teacher and His disciples. Christ’s desire truly was and is that we are so united to Him and to other members of His body that He continues His work in us and through us. St. Teresa of Ávila puts this beautifully, “Christ has no body now on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours, yours are the eyes through which Christ's compassion is to look out to the earth, yours are the feet by which He is to go about doing good and yours are the hands by which He is to bless us now.”

This Sunday’s readings help give some context to the Solemnity of the Ascension and to the words of St. Teresa. In today’s gospel, we read the beginning of the seventeenth chapter of the Gospel of John which is known as the priestly prayer of Jesus. In this prayer, Jesus prays for the strength He needs to undergo His passion and He prays for His disciples that they may be strengthened as well. Several times in this prayer Jesus uses the word consecrate as He lifts up His disciples in prayer. When a priest celebrates Mass and the bread and wine are consecrated, they truly become the body and blood of Christ, so as Jesus prays for us and consecrates us to the Father Jesus is truly praying that we become members of His body. We should take these words of Jesus seriously.

In His prayer what Jesus is asking of the Father is that we remain so united to Him and so filled with His grace that our works and prayers carry forth the mission of transforming and sanctifying the world. What’s left for us now is to turn to the Lord who has gathered us in this way, to ask Him what it is He wants us to do, and to go forth and do it. – Fr. Carlos

Na passada quinta-feira celebrámos a Solenidade da Ascensão. Esta solenidade pode ser confusa para alguns porque na Arquidiocese de Boston, junto com outras seis dioceses nos EUA, é um dia de preceito, mas em muitos outros lugares, a observância desta solenidade é transferida para este domingo, que nós na Arquidiocese de Boston celebra como o sétimo domingo da Páscoa. A transferência desta solenidade é muitas vezes feita por razões práticas, mas acho que a Arquidiocese de Boston, e outros lugares onde a Ascensão é observada na quinta-feira, exercem grande sabedoria ao celebrar a solenidade no dia tradicional. Pode ser desafiador parar as nossas rotinas semanais e fazer tempo para ir à missa, mas esses momentos lembram-nos que a prática da fé não é uma questão de conveniência, mas sim uma oportunidade de nos esforçarmos para sermos mais generosos ao oferecer o nosso tempo e talentos para Deus. No próximo ano, a Solenidade da Ascensão cai na quinta-feira, 18 de maio. Marquem nos seus calendários.

Celebrar a Solenidade da Ascensão na quinta-feira também nos oferece a oportunidade de refletir tanto sobre as leituras da solenidade como sobre as leituras do VII domingo da Páscoa. As leituras dessas duas celebrações ajudam a nos preparar para os próximos fins de semana, que contêm uma abundância de celebrações poderosas. Durante os próximos três domingos, celebraremos as Solenidades de Pentecostes, Santíssima Trindade e Corpus Christi (Preciosíssimo Corpo e Sangue de Cristo). Essas três solenidades dão-nos uma rica visão da vida da Igreja e das nossas vidas cristãs individuais. A Solenidade da Ascensão começa a dar o tom a estas celebrações.

A Ascensão comemora o fim do tempo pós-ressurreição de Jesus com os seus discípulos. Este momento não é o fim da obra de Jesus na terra; é antes o momento em que este trabalho é transformado. Até este ponto, os discípulos estavam recebendo os ensinamentos de Jesus e Sua graça. Eles estavam saindo e começando a compartilhar a boa nova, mas é depois da Ascensão e particularmente depois de Pentecostes que a sua missão muda em caráter e intensidade. Agora fica claro que ser membro do Corpo de Cristo não é uma expressão metafórica nem é uma maneira piedosa de expressar o relacionamento entre um mestre e os seus discípulos. O desejo de Cristo realmente era e é que estejamos tão unidos a Ele e a outros membros do seu corpo que Ele continue a sua obra em nós e através de nós. Santa Teresa de Ávila coloca isso lindamente: Cristo não tem atualmente sobre a terra nenhum outro corpo se não o teu; Nenhumas outras mãos senão as tuas; nenhuns outros pés senão os teus. Tu és os olhos com os quais a compaixão de Cristo deve olhar o mundo; Tu és os pés com os quais Ele deve ir fazendo o bem; Tu és as mãos com os quais Ele deve abençoar os homens de hoje."

            As leituras deste domingo ajudam a contextualizar a Solenidade da Ascensão e as palavras de Santa Teresa. No evangelho de hoje, lemos o início do capítulo dezessete do Evangelho de João, conhecido como a oração sacerdotal de Jesus. Nesta oração, Jesus pede a força que Ele precisa para suportar a sua paixão e Ele ora por Seus discípulos para que eles também sejam fortalecidos. Várias vezes nesta oração, Jesus usa a palavra consagrar ao levantar os seus discípulos em oração. Quando um padre celebra a missa, o pão e o vinho são consagrados, eles se tornam verdadeiramente o corpo e o sangue de Cristo, da mesma maneira quando Jesus ora por nós e nos consagra ao Pai, Jesus está verdadeiramente orando para que nos tornemos membros do Seu corpo. Devemos tomar seriamente essas palavras de Jesus.

Na Sua oração, o que Jesus está pedindo ao Pai é que permaneçamos tão unidos a Ele e tão cheios de Sua graça que as nossas obras e orações cumpram a missão de transformar e santificar o mundo. O que devemos fazer agora é voltarmos-nos para o Senhor que nos reuniu dessa maneira, perguntar a Ele o que Ele quer que façamos e ir adiante e fazê-lo. – Pe. Carlos
