SATURDAY MORNINGS IN JUNE AND JULY

Over the coming weeks we have 7 First Holy Communion Masses and a Confirmation Mass. Details will be in the newsletter each week, but to give you a bit more notice here are some details.

On Saturdays 4th June, 11th June, 25th June, 9th July and 16th July there will be no Morning Prayer, Rosary, Adoration or Sacrament of Reconciliation. On 4th June, 25th June and 16th July there will be First Holy Communion Masses at 10.00 am and 12.00 noon.

On 9th July the First Holy Communion Mass will be at 10.00 am (followed by Baptisms).

On 11th June Bishop Richard will be celebrating our Confirmation Mass at 11.00 am, and there will be no parish Mass that morning.

NOVENA AND CONSECRATION TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

On June 5th we will be celebrating Pentecost Sunday – the coming of the Holy Spirit on the apostles and other disciples.

People throughout our Diocese are being invited to join a Novena of prayer in preparation for Pentecost. By clicking on this link you will find a reading, reflection and prayer for each of the nine days beginning on Friday 27th May. On the final day of the Novena, Saturday 4th June, we will have a Holy Hour beginning at 3.30 pm, followed by Benediction at 4.30 pm, during which we will pray together an Act of Consecration to the Holy Spirit, hear the Word of God, sing and be silent before our Lord, present in the Blessed Sacrament.

We do encourage you to join this special time of prayer in our Parish and Diocese. It is a wonderful opportunity to pray for your own spiritual renewal, for the Holy Spirit to come afresh into your life with a new outpouring of the Gifts of the Spirit.

FOOD BANK COLLECTION

We are restarting regular Woking Foodbank collections on the first weekend of each month. The first will be after all Masses on the weekend of Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th June. They are grateful for all donations but are particularly in need of shampoo and hair conditioner, tinned salmon and ham, tinned custard, crisps, long-life puddings, small jars of coffee, hot chocolate, long-life full milk, size 3 nappies and bleach.

RETURNING TO MASS AT PENTECOST

The Bishops of England and Wales have issued a statement about the restoration of the Sunday Obligation at Pentecost. The full text can be found here. With the lessening of the challenges of the Covid pandemic, and the return of many people to more normal activities, they have decided that the Sunday Obligation will be restored at Pentecost. They also acknowledge however, that for some people, their personal risk would mean that they do not feel safe to return to Mass and, as has always been the case, this would not be a breach of the Sunday Obligation.

DEACON NICK'S ORDINATION TO THE PRIESTHOOD

2nd July, 2.00 pm, Arundel Cathedral

We have booked a coach to go from St Dunstan's to Arundel Cathedral for this wonderful occasion. The coach will leave at 11.45 am, returning after the Ordination Mass has finished. We expect this to be by 5.00 / 5.30 pm. The cost will be £10 per adult or £20 per family. If you would like to come then please email the Parish Office. Monies will be collected on the day and seats allocated on a 'first come, first served' basis.

are available in the Repository. The Repository is open after most Sunday Masses and can be opened by request during the week.

NEW PARISHIONERS’ EVENINGS

It has been a long time since we held a New Parishioners’ Evening here at St Dunstan’s. A large number of families have registered with the Parish since Covid began. We are now ready to invite all those who have joined St Dunstan’s Parish since January 2020 to one of three New Parishioners’ Evenings: Friday 10th June, Friday 8th July or Friday 22nd July at 7.30 pm. If you have registered with the Parish, then you will have received an invitation. If you are new but have not registered, then you are still welcome to join one of the evenings, but please do also register with the parish.

ST DUNSTAN’S PARISH ‘RETREAT’ TO LOURDES
Monday 26th – Friday 30th September

If you would like to go to Lourdes for 5 days of prayer, quiet and reflection, then please get in touch with the Parish Office. Brochures for the trip are available from the Parish Office.

Travel will be by air and coach. Accommodation will be in a hotel within easy walking distance of the Domain where the Grotto and the Basilicas are situated. There will be many opportunities for individuals to spend time in prayer, but also the possibility, if you wish, to join with others for some of the big events taking place regularly in Lourdes: the International Mass, the Torchlight Procession and the Blessed Sacrament Procession. There will also be the option of joining a half day trip to Bartrès and the Lac de Lourdes.

You will also receive emails about the Sacred Heart of Jesus and some of the feast days in June. They are well-worth reading. For those with young children there are some suggestions for Family Faith Activities. Learning about our faith is a life-long challenge. So do take these opportunities to grow in in your love and understanding of God and the Church.

READINGS FOR SUNDAY MAY 29th 2022

Seventh Sunday of Easter

Acts 7:55-60. Stephen was so convinced of Jesus’ eternal presence that death was a gateway to a life more rich and fulfilling than anything this world could offer. Sometimes we confess this belief with our words, but the way we behave denies it. Are we really convinced that God will keep his promises, even when a loved one is at the point of death, or when witnessing to Christ threatens our popularity or our lifestyle? Being children of eternity does not preclude grief and heartache: in the person of Jesus we see that love is often compatible with tears. Yet it does mean that at bedrock level when we are confronted with the bleak, barren landscape of despair, Jesus alone, Lord of earth and heaven, time and eternity, reaches across death, across annihilation and keeps his word to be one with us for ever, in this world and the world to come.

Psalm 96:1-2b, 6-7, 9. The Lord is king, most high above all the earth.

Apocalypse 22:12-14, 16-17, 20. This is the life-giving truth shown to John in his revelation, which is food to the hungry and drink to the thirsty: Jesus will be with us to comfort and strengthen us in every situation. We only have to turn to him and ask for his help.

John 17:20-26. From this greatly moving prayer of Jesus we can catch something of the extent of God’s love for us: his deep longing for us to share in the life which alone can give us the complete joy, peace and fulfilment that we crave. Our craving leads us down many false turnings and into many blind alleys from which we emerge frustrated, disillusioned and cynical. Hence the prayer that we will be united in love; love alone can bind us to God and each other, and love breaks down all barriers that divide, however high they have become and however long they have been standing. God is with us, and with God nothing shall be impossible.

READINGS FOR SUNDAY JUNE 4th 2022

Pentecost

Acts of the Apostles 2:1-11. Luke describes the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles on Pentecost Day and the powerful effect it had on them. The Jewish feast of Pentecost was one of the three major pilgrim festivals of Israel. The fact that it was a pilgrim feast explains why devout Jews from every nation were in Jerusalem at this time. Since the account in Greek does not use gender-specific language we can conclude that women, men and children were all present.

Psalm 103: 1, 24, 29-31, 34. Send forth your Spirit, O Lord, and renew the face of the earth.

Romans 8:8-17. This reading consists of three different, yet related themes: an acclamation that Jesus is Lord; a clear statement that there is a variety of gifts within the Christian community; the body metaphor that characterises that diversity of gifts. The metaphor of the human body emphasises the importance of unity in diversity rather than uniformity.

John 14:15-16, 23-26. IIt can be difficult to see beyond our reality. We live lives that are narrowly focused, conditioned by our environment, traditions and habits. So it is with the disciples. They have a sense that their relationship with Jesus is about to change. Some may even fear that the relationship is coming to an end. But Jesus offers reassurance and hope, the Spirit or the Advocate to be with them for ever. Their recognition of the Spirit and their awareness of his presence comes from continuing to keep the commandments of Christ to live in love. The Spirit will be a teacher unlocking the riches within them.

LITTLE BAKERS, BIG HEARTS CAKE SALE

The SVP would like to thank everyone who contributed to the Little Bakers, Big Hearts cake sale last weekend. The cakes were delicious and the sale raised a grand total of £660 which will be donated to the Romanian SVP for their support of Ukrainian refugees.

for applications to start in Reception class September 2023

Please note our Open Mornings for parents to visit the school with regards to applying for a place in September 2023, will be on Friday 14th October and Friday 18th November 2022.

If you would like to find out about how to apply for a place for your child at our school, then please do attend this presentation. A prompt arrival for the 9.30am start would be very much appreciated and the session will finish by 11am. Car parking will be available in the lower school playground.

The Open Morning is for parents/carers only. Please therefore could we ask you to pre-arrange childcare for young children and babies.

ADMISSION TO RECEPTION at ST DUNSTAN’S SCHOOL in SEPTEMBER 2023

When you apply for your child to be admitted into the Reception Year at St Dunstan’s School in September 2023, one of the forms you will have to submit to the school is the Supplementary Information Form (SIF). One of the questions on the form asks you to state how often you attend Sunday (or Saturday evening) Mass. Once you have completed the SIF form, a priest in the parish where you normally attend Mass must sign the form indicating that they confirm (or not) the Mass attendance you have stated. This will happen during December. Dates will be in the newsletter.

St Dunstan’s is a very large Parish, and it is impossible for the priest(s) to be objective about their response to what has been stated on your form. For this reason, we offer you the opportunity to ‘sign’ a register of attendance at Mass whenever you come on either Saturday evening or Sunday. In this way the priest can look at the register when you bring your SIF form for signing in December and compare the two.
Signing will begin on the weekend of June 25th/26th. To join the signing process you need to come to the Parish Office on a weekday to set up a sheet for your child. You will also be given more information about what is involved. The Office is normally open 9.00-1.00 and 2.00-5.00, but do avoid times when Mass is being celebrated.

The Parish Magazine is now accepting contributions in the form of stories, comments, letters, reflective accounts, prayers or photos for the Summer edition. UKRAINE HUMANITARIAN APPEALS

To give financial support visit the DEC Ukraine Appeal webpage or use any of the contactless-giving machines in the Narthex. Material donations can be dropped off at St Mary’s Church, Horsell. They are in particular need of food, medicines and anything medical, toiletries, female hygiene products, nappies, baby items, torches, batteries, power supplies, sleeping bags, cleaning products and pet food. They are no longer taking textiles, toys or books. You can also visit the Diocesan website for information on the different ways in which parishes and communities can help the people of Ukraine including links to the Homes for Ukraine initiative. The St Vincent de Paul Society (SVP) is sending financial support to the Romanian SVP, helping many Ukrainians fleeing the war. To donate visit ‘The Disaster Fund’ at www.svp.org.uk or drop a donation into the Parish Office (cheques made payable to SVP). Gift Aid forms and envelopes are available in the Narthex.

The Annual Pilgrimage to the Shrine at West Grinstead for Grandparents and all those who fulfil this role in so many different ways. The day begins at 11.00 am with coffee available from 10.30 am. REFUGEE CRISIS COFFEE MORNING WITH BISHOP RICHARD

WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES

The World Meeting of Families happens every 3 years celebrating the wonder that lies within family life. PROM PRAISE

Saturday 11th June, 7.30 pm, Woking United Reformed Church

An uplifting evening of classic and contemporary orchestral praise and worship led by Prom Praise conductor Noel Tredinnick. There will be well-loved hymns and worship songs, plus solo performances all led in Noel's exuberant and joyful style. The event is free, but please book a place to attend in person. Chaplaincy HMP Send

Have you thought about joining a friendly team of volunteers who are dedicated to working with vulnerable people?

The Chaplaincy are recruiting volunteers to help with administrative duties. If you like working with similar minded people and have half a day or more free each week, this may be the volunteering job for you.
We are looking for people with good communication skills and who can use e mail. Microsoft Word and Excel experience would be an advantage but not essential as training is available.

MEMORIAL DAY 2022
Brookwood American Cemetery

Brookwood American Cemetery will host its annual Memorial Day Ceremony on Sunday May 29th. Attendance is free and open to the public. The ceremony will be followed by a reception and everyone is welcome.
