Happy Feast of Pentecost! The feast of Pentecost invites us to remember our roots and origins and remember our destinations. In the ancient Jewish world Pentecost was one of the three most important religious holidays. Taking place fifty days after the Passover it was the day when the first fruits of the spring harvest were offered to God. It was also the day that commemorated God giving the ten commandments to Moses. These events, the Passover, the encounter on Sinai, and the covenants form an important part of the origin story narrative of the Chosen people, both the Jewish people and the rest of humanity who were grafted on through Jesus’ salvific mission. 

Origin stories, whether factual or fictional, whether religious or secular, are a popular genre in literature and in pop culture. Once moviemakers have made a fortune telling their stories they often go back and try to make another fortune, telling the story that happened before the story. We do the same thing when telling the story of our lives, sometimes we’re honest and acknowledge the imperfections of our origins, but sometimes we give in to the temptation of polishing up our biography or our sprucing up our family tree.  

We seek to improve the narrative by polishing away imperfections, but such an act only goes so far. It may deceive our acquaintances, but it’ll never deceive those who matter most, especially the One who has been active throughout all the messiness of our lives. Rather than editing our lives through storytelling, God invites us to transform our lives by allowing Him to be the one that does the work. The apostles show us that the most fruitful transformation comes about when we put our imperfections before God and allow Him to purify us.  Think of Peter and his imperfections. His impulsiveness and rashness are on display all throughout the gospels. These imperfections are crowned by Peter’s denial of Jesus. If Peter were another sort of person, we could well imagine him telling and retelling the story of events to fix the storyline. By the hundredth retelling, Peter who deserted Jesus might even emerge as the hero.   However, Peter fixes the narrative not by altering it but rather by facing His failings, repenting, and experiencing the rebirth that comes from Christ’s forgiveness. Peter becomes the rock on which the Church is founded not because of His greatness but rather because by acknowledging his unworthiness He allows God to make him worthy. These same imperfections become the characteristics that make Peter such a zealous apostle. Impulsiveness, once tempered, becomes the fiery zeal that makes Peter an effective preacher. In the same way, the experiences of our past can be purified and transformed to make us effective disciples of the Lord. Our flaws and failings can be seen as momentary cracks in our artificially perfect veneer, or we can acknowledge them for what they are, indications of the areas where we still have to invite Jesus in along with His transforming grace. 

Our origin stories are important, but they’re not as important as making sure our stories end in God’s divine glory. We can keep trying to grab the pen and rewrite the narrative, or we can give it over to the Lord and by doing so we can see how He was writing a beautiful narrative with our crooked lines all along. As we celebrate this great feast of Pentecost let us ask God to continue yielding a fruitful harvest in us and through us. – Fr. Carlos

            Feliz festa de Pentecostes! A festa de Pentecostes convida-nos a recordar as nossas raízes e origens e a recordar os nossos destinos. No antigo mundo judaico, o Pentecostes era um dos três feriados religiosos mais importantes. Ocorrendo cinquenta dias depois da Páscoa, era o dia em que as primícias da colheita da primavera eram oferecidas a Deus. Foi também o dia que comemorou o momento quando Deus deu os dez mandamentos a Moisés. Esses eventos, a Páscoa, o encontro no Sinai e as alianças formam uma parte importante da narrativa da história de origem do povo escolhido, tanto o povo judeu quanto o resto da humanidade que foram enxertados pela missão salvífica de Jesus.

Histórias de origem, sejam factuais ou fictícias, religiosas ou seculares, são um gênero popular na literatura e na cultura pop. Uma vez que os cineastas fazem uma fortuna contando as suas histórias, eles muitas vezes voltam e tentam fazer outra fortuna, contando a história que aconteceu antes da história. Fazemos a mesma coisa ao contar a história das nossas vidas, às vezes somos honestos e reconhecemos as imperfeições das nossas origens, mas às vezes cedemos à tentação de polir a nossa biografia ou enfeitar a nossa árvore genealógica.

Procuramos melhorar a narrativa polindo as imperfeições, mas tal ato só vai tão longe. Pode enganar os nossos conhecidos, mas nunca enganará aqueles que mais importam, especialmente Aquele que esteve ativo durante toda a desordem das nossas vidas. Em vez de editar as nossas vidas por meio de histórias, Deus nos convida a transformar as nossas vidas, permitindo que Ele seja quem faz o trabalho. Os apóstolos mostram-nos que a transformação mais frutífera acontece quando colocamos as nossas imperfeições diante de Deus e permitimos que Ele nos purifique. Pensem em Pedro e as suas imperfeições. Sua impulsividade e imprudência estão em exibição em todos os evangelhos. Essas imperfeições são coroadas pela negação de Jesus por Pedro. Se Pedro fosse outro tipo de pessoa, poderíamos imaginá-lo contando e recontando a história dos eventos para fixar o enredo. Pela centésima recontagem, Pedro que abandonou Jesus pode até emergir como o herói. No entanto, Pedro corrige a narrativa não a alterando, mas enfrentando as suas falhas, arrependendo-se e experimentando o renascimento que vem do perdão de Cristo. Pedro torna-se a rocha sobre a qual a Igreja está fundada não por causa da sua grandeza, mas porque reconhecendo a sua indignidade, ele permite que Deus o torne digno. Essas mesmas imperfeições se tornam as características que fazem de Pedro um apóstolo tão zeloso. A impulsividade, uma vez temperada, torna-se o zelo ardente que faz de Pedro um pregador eficaz. Da mesma forma, as experiências do nosso passado podem ser purificadas e transformadas para nos tornarmos discípulos efetivos do Senhor. 

As nossas falhas podem ser vistas como rachaduras momentâneas no nosso verniz artificialmente perfeito, ou podemos reconhecê-las pelo que são, indicações das áreas em que ainda temos que convidar Jesus junto com Sua graça transformadora.

As nossas histórias de origem são importantes, mas não são tão importantes quanto garantir que as nossas histórias terminem na glória divina de Deus. Podemos continuar tentando pegar a caneta e reescrever a narrativa, ou podemos entregá-la ao Senhor e ao fazer isso podemos ver como Ele estava escrevendo uma bela narrativa com as nossas linhas tortas o tempo todo. Ao celebrarmos esta grande festa de Pentecostes, peçamos a Deus que continue produzindo uma colheita frutífera em nós e através de nós. – Pe. Carlos
