Prayer Exercise
Put yourself in a comfortable, quiet spot. God is already with you, acknowledge Him, welcome Him. We will focus on the gift of the Holy Spirit promised to us by Jesus.
Become aware of your breath. Take several breaths. Slowly breathing in for a count of four and exhaling for a count of four. The very act of breathing is an expression of the presence of God. Tune into your breathing, let your mind be at rest. God gives us our breaths. In Hebrew, Spirit and breath are the same word, ruah.
At our Baptism and Confirmation, God sends his Spirit in a special way to reside in us. As you sit in the quiet, notice how you experience the Spirit residing in you. Where do you come to know the active presence of God? In your heart? Your mind? Your gut? Be aware of this truth: God lives in you by the Spirit, here, now. If you don't feel His presence, ask God to help you recognize it.
Continue for as long as you feel called to be in the stillness, aware that God is with you. What might the Spirit be praying in and through you? Set words completely aside. Listen. (adapted from Loyola Press) Come Holy Spirit.
