One thing that is striking about life in our Catholic Parishes of Stoughton is the diversity of the backgrounds of our parishioners. Just among our priests, we have at least four different languages which were spoken in our family homes, and when we extend that to the body of Christ that gathers to worship in our parishes, I would confidently say that at least some fifteen different languages are spoken by the members of our collaborative. We are truly blessed to have such a rich variety of the universal Church represented in this little corner of the vineyard. 

If Jesus made one thing clear in establishing the Church it’s that it would not be bound by tribe or tongue, by people or nation, but rather that the Church was meant to be a universal invitation where all would be welcomed so long as their hearts were open to welcome God’s invitation to dwell in a deep and abiding communion with Him. 

The Solemnities we celebrate these next two Sundays speak to us of this reality. They make clear who God is and who God has called us to be. This Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, celebrating God’s nature as Three Persons in one God. This central belief of our Christian faith makes clear that God’s nature is a communion of love. Next Sunday's Solemnity, the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, the Body and Blood of Christ, makes clear that in giving us the Eucharist Jesus is giving us His own self as our nourishment, and in doing so He is making us sharers in the divine life of the Trinity. To share in the life of the Trinity is to make sure we live in a way that fosters communion and fosters love.

            Such a way of life can grate against our human nature, which at times is plagued by the temptation towards focusing excessively on individual concerns or the temptation to establish ingroups and outgroups, those that belong and those that are excluded. Such temptations have no place in hearts that have accepted the invitation to live the life of Trinitarian love. We can admit that there are some who will not accept the invitation to God’s table, but we must live and worship in such a way that we proclaim the truth of who God is and do our part to welcome others to full communion. 

In an attempt to further strengthen those bonds of unity and communion, we’ll be making some minor changes to how we worship over the next few months. I have asked that at our Masses, both in English and in Portuguese, we begin to more regularly use some of the Latin Responses, particularly the Agnus Dei for the Lamb of God and the Sanctus for the Holy Holy. The Second Vatican Council wisely encouraged the use of the vernacular so that the readings and the worship of Mass were more understandable to people. However, it never intended to get rid of Latin from the liturgy in the wholesale way that has occurred in so many places. Having some of our responses in Latin, which continues to be a central language for Church life, along with the Alleluia and the occasional use of the Kyrie Eleison for the penitential rite and making sure that all our people are familiar with these responses will ensure that whether we attend Mass in English or Portuguese, regardless of whether we are fluent in either of those languages, we’ll still be able to have these touchstones which will allow us to join more firmly together as a worshipping community in all of our Masses. 

            In addition to this liturgical move, and on a practical note that extends beyond the celebration of Mass, one idea which has continued to come up in my prayer is the thought of offering ESL classes in our collaborative. We are blessed to have a steady stream of new arrivals to our communities, many of whom do not speak English as their primary language. As members of the Body of Christ, I think offering ESL classes would be a great service that some of our members could provide to those of our brothers and sisters who are more recent arrivals in order to help them engage more fully with civic life as well as making it easier for them to participate more fully as members of the Body of Christ. As always, this is my thought and prayer, to bring it to fulfillment requires that at least some of you agree that it’s a need and step forward to bring this vision to fulfillment.  If you’re interested in helping out with this endeavor, and if you have other ideas of how we could strengthen our parishes, please let me know. Uma coisa que chama atenção na vida das nossas paróquias católicas de Stoughton é a diversidade das origens dos nossos paroquianos. Apenas entre os nossos padres, temos pelo menos quatro línguas diferentes que foram faladas nas nossas casas de família, e quando estendemos isso ao corpo de Cristo que se reúne para rezar nas nossas paróquias, eu diria com confiança que pelo menos quinze línguas diferentes são faladas pelos membros da nossa colaborativa. Somos verdadeiramente abençoados por ter uma variedade tão rica da Igreja universal representada neste pequeno canto da vinha.

Se Jesus deixou uma coisa clara ao estabelecer a Igreja é que ela não seria limitada por tribo ou língua, por povo ou nação, mas sim que a Igreja deveria ser um convite universal onde todos seriam bem-vindos, desde que os seus corações estivessem abertos para acolher o convite de Deus para habitar em comunhão profunda e permanente com Ele.

As Solenidades que celebramos nestes próximos dois domingos falam-nos desta realidade. Eles deixam claro quem é Deus e quem Deus nos chamou para ser. Neste domingo celebramos a Solenidade da Santíssima Trindade, celebrando a natureza de Deus como Três Pessoas num só Deus. Essa crença central da nossa fé cristã deixa claro que a natureza de Deus é uma comunhão de amor. A solenidade do próximo domingo, a Solenidade de Corpus Christi, o Corpo e Sangue de Cristo, deixa claro que, ao nos dar a Eucaristia, Jesus está nos dando a si mesmo como nosso alimento e, ao fazê-lo, nos torna participantes da vida divina da Trindade. Compartilhar a vida da Trindade é aceitar a missão de viver duma maneira que promova a comunhão e promova o amor.

Tal modo de vida pode ir contra a nossa natureza humana, que às vezes é levada pela tentação de se concentrar excessivamente nas preocupações individuais ou pela tentação de estabelecer grupos internos e externos, os que pertencem e os que são excluídos. Tais tentações não têm lugar nos corações que aceitaram o convite para viver a vida de amor trinitário. Podemos admitir que há alguns que não vão aceitar o convite para a mesa de Deus, mas devemos viver e rezar de tal forma que proclamemos a verdade de quem é Deus e façamos a nossa parte para acolher os outros à plena comunhão.

Numa tentativa de fortalecer ainda mais esses laços de unidade e comunhão, faremos algumas pequenas mudanças em como celebramos a missa nos próximos meses. Pedi que nas nossas missas, tanto em inglês quanto em português, comecemos a usar com mais regularidade algumas das respostas em latim, particularmente o Agnus Dei para o Cordeiro de Deus e o Sanctus para o Santo Santo. O Concílio Vaticano II encorajou sabiamente o uso do vernáculo para que as leituras e o culto da Missa fossem mais compreensíveis para as pessoas. No entanto, a igreja nunca teve a intenção de deixar ao lado o uso de latim da maneira que ocorreu em tantos lugares. Ter algumas das nossas respostas em latim, que continua a ser uma língua central para a vida da Igreja, juntamente com a Aleluia e o uso ocasional do Kyrie Eleison para o rito penitencial e garantir que todo o nosso povo esteja familiarizado com essas respostas garantirá que quer participemos da missa em inglês ou português, independentemente de sermos fluentes em qualquer um desses idiomas, ainda poderemos ter essas pedras de toque que nos permitirão nos unir mais firmemente como comunidade de fé em todas as nossas missas.

Além dessa mudança litúrgica, e numa nota prática que se estende além da celebração da Missa, uma ideia que continua a surgir na minha oração é a ideia de oferecer aulas de inglês na nossa colaborativa. Somos abençoados por ter um fluxo constante de recém-chegados às nossas comunidades, muitos dos quais não falam inglês como idioma principal. Como membros do Corpo de Cristo, acho que oferecer aulas de inglês seria um grande serviço que alguns dos nossos membros poderiam prestar aos nossos irmãos e irmãs que chegaram mais recentemente, a fim de ajudá-los a se envolver mais plenamente com a vida cívica também como facilitando para eles participarem mais plenamente como membros do Corpo de Cristo. Como sempre, este é o meu pensamento e oração, para realizá-lo requer que pelo menos alguns de vocês concordem que é uma necessidade e deem um passo à frente para realizar essa visão. My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

I write with good news which is at the same time challenging news.

Fr. Ixon has been named pastor of the parishes in Avon and Holbrook. As a member of the personnel board that assists our director of clergy personnel, Fr. Bob Blaney, in assigning pastors, I fully support Fr. Ixon in this new mission. As you have seen over the past year, and some of you even longer, he has tremendous pastoral gifts. He’s a great preacher and a priest of great warmth and pastoral sensitivity.  I’m sure you would all agree that we’ve been abundantly blessed by his presence during this year in Stoughton. On a personal note, Fr. Ixon and I overlapped for a year in seminary and so all these many years later it’s been a truly tremendous blessing for me to be able to serve together with him during this year. Fr. Ixon begins his new assignment on July 1. Please pray for Father Ixon as he undertakes his new assignment. 

As far as the challenging piece of this news is the fact that at least for now, and for the foreseeable future our collaborative will not be receiving another parochial vicar. As an Archdiocese, we’re in a very tight position and we need to continue to adapt to the reality that there are simply not enough priests to fill all the places where we are needed. I will continue to serve as pastor here and I can say with some confidence that I’m here for the long haul. Thanks be to God. Fr. Eduardo will also continue to be part of our team for the foreseeable future. At the same time, going down from three priests to two priests will require some adjustments. While we may have to rely on more coverage from visiting priests, I do not intend to make it too much more frequent than it has been during our almost two years together. I do not plan to alter our weekend Mass schedule, but our weekday Mass schedule does need to be altered. I will be presenting my plan to you in the coming days after Fr. Eduardo returns from vacation and he and I have an opportunity to map things out together. 

I do not intend to veer from my plan of us being one collaborative with two parishes. I am not going to head down the road of merger and neither St. James nor Immaculate is in danger of closing. You know that all these rumors and more will spark up among our people. Please do your best not to engage in these fruitless and sinful gossipy conversations and do your best to stop these rumors. Instead of gossip and speculation let us turn to prayer. With God all things are possible! I firmly trust that God has amazing things in store for us here in Stoughton. Let us continue to pray individually and together and let us each do our part to build up this corner of the vineyard.

Queridos irmãos e irmãs em Cristo,

Escrevo com boas notícias que são ao mesmo tempo, notícias difíceis.

Pe. Ixon foi nomeado pároco das paróquias de Avon e Holbrook. Como membro do conselho de pessoal que ajuda o nosso diretor de pessoal do clero, o Pe. Bob Blaney, ao nomear pastores, apoio totalmente o Pe. Ixon nesta nova missão. Como vocês viram no ano passado, e alguns de vocês por ainda mais tempo, ele tem tremendos dons pastorais. Ele é um grande pregador e um sacerdote de grande calor humano e sensibilidade pastoral. Tenho certeza de que todos concordam que fomos abundantemente abençoados por sua presença durante este ano em Stoughton. Em nota pessoal, Pe. Ixon e eu sobrepomo-nos por um ano no seminário e, todos esses anos depois, foi uma tremenda bênção para mim poder servir junto com ele durante este ano. Pe. Ixon começa a sua nova missão no 1º de julho. Por favor, orem pelo Padre Ixon enquanto ele assume a sua nova missão.

A parte desafiadora desta notícia é o fato de que, pelo menos por enquanto, e no futuro próximo, a nossa colaborativa não receberá outro vigário paroquial. Como arquidiocese, estamos numa posição muito apertada e precisamos continuar nos adaptando à realidade de que simplesmente não há padres suficientes para preencher todos os lugares onde somos necessários. Continuarei a servir como pastor aqui e posso dizer com alguma confiança que estou aqui a longo prazo. Graças a Deus! Pe. Eduardo também continuará fazendo parte da nossa equipe no futuro próximo. Ao mesmo tempo, descer de três sacerdotes para dois sacerdotes exigirá alguns ajustes. Embora possamos ter que contar com mais cobertura de padres visitantes, não pretendo que isso aconteça muito mais frequentemente do que tem sido durante os nossos quase dois anos juntos. Eu não planeio alterar o nosso horário de Missa de fim de semana, mas nosso horário de Missa de segunda a sexta precisa ser alterado. Estarei apresentando meu plano a vocês nos próximos dias depois que o Pe. Eduardo volta de férias e eu e ele temos a oportunidade de mapear as coisas juntos.

Não pretendo desviar-me do meu plano de nós sermos uma colaborativa com duas paróquias. Não vou seguir o caminho da fusão e nem a St. James, nem a Imaculada corre o risco de fechar. Vocês sabem que todos esses rumores e muito mais vão despertar entre o nosso povo com esta notícia. Por favor, faça o seu melhor para não se envolver nessas conversas de fofocas infrutíferas e pecaminosas e faça o seu melhor para parar esses rumores. Em vez de fofocas e especulações, voltemos à oração. Com Deus tudo é possível! Confio firmemente que Deus tem coisas incríveis reservadas para nós aqui em Stoughton. Continuemos a rezar individualmente e juntos, e cada um façamos o compromisso de fazer a nossa parte para construir este recanto da vinha.
