The Month of June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the Friday following the second Sunday after Pentecost. This year, it falls on June 24, 2022. We can prepare for the Feast by beginning a Novena to the Sacred Heart on the Feast of Corpus Christi, which is the Thursday of the week before. On the Feast of the Sacred Heart itself, we can gain a plenary indulgence by making an Act of Reparation to the Sacred Heart.
A symbol of love and mercy, devotion to the Sacred Heart started in the twelfth century. Saints such as Bonaventure, Gertrude, Catherine of Siena, and John Eudes were drawn to the Sacred Heart. Pope Innocent VI instituted a Mass that honored the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1353 AD, but it was not until 1670 that Saint Jean Eudes, a priest of the Order of Our Lady of Charity, celebrated the first Feast of the Sacred Heart. In 1899, Pope Leo XIII consecrated the entire world to the devotion of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
