This week the Church celebrates the Feast of Corpus Christi, the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. In many parts of the world, this is a day marked with great solemnity with High Masses and huge Eucharistic processions. In our own Archdiocese, we begin our celebration of this weekend this year with a Eucharistic Congress. These celebrations serve both to express our faith and to nourish it, but we need to go deeper. Our belief in the Eucharist must be at the center of our faith and at the center of our lives. 

Lumen Gentium, one of the great documents of the Second Vatican Council expresses this concretely by saying that the Holy Eucharist is the “source and summit of the Christian life.” In the Eucharist, we find the source of our identity and of our mission in the world. In the Eucharist, we find nourishment that strengthens us for life and that heals us from the wounds of sin. Our encounter with our Lord in the Eucharist should be one of the things that we most long for, but we can’t deny that often we fail to respond to Jesus in the Eucharist. We must also admit that there are many Catholics that don’t understand the importance of the Eucharist, and even among Catholics there is a significant number that denies the real presence.

 In light of this, it is ever more urgent to reflect upon what we are called to believe about the Eucharist and why. The fact that the Eucharist is the Body and Blood of Christ is not something that the Church made up. This belief comes from the very words of Jesus. Jesus presents the truth about what He is giving us in the Eucharist in very concrete terms, and we can see that he is speaking concretely and not symbolically because this teaching is the only one that caused Jesus’ disciples to turn away and leave him in large numbers as we see in the Gospel of John (Jn 6:66) There were those who didn’t understand what Jesus meant and there were others who understood but who couldn’t accept this teaching. Although many turned away, Jesus never responded by saying He was just kidding or by changing what He had taught. What he taught is the truth. The Eucharist is the full generous gift of a God who loves us so much that His sole desire is to draw near to us so that we may draw near to Him, and to give us His life to strengthen us in our journey through life and that we may share eternal life and glory with him. 

Therefore, what we must do as disciples is twofold. First, we must accept what Jesus taught, and secondly, we must ask Jesus to guide us so that we can understand the gift of the Eucharist even more clearly. We must do this not only to enrich our own faith lives but also so that we can fulfill our role as ambassadors of the Lord and go forth and share this great gift and good news with others. -- Fr. Esta semana a Igreja celebra a Festa de Corpus Christi, a Festa do Corpo e Sangue de Cristo. Em muitas partes do mundo, este é um dia marcado com grande solenidade com missas e grandes procissões eucarísticas. Na nossa própria Arquidiocese, iniciamos a celebração deste fim de semana neste ano com um Congresso Eucarístico. Essas celebrações servem tanto para expressar a nossa fé quanto para alimentá-la, mas precisamos ir mais fundo. A nossa crença na Eucaristia deve estar no centro da nossa fé e no centro das nossas vidas.

O Lumen Gentium, um dos grandes documentos do Concílio Vaticano II, expressa isso concretamente ao dizer que a Sagrada Eucaristia é a “fonte e centro da toda a vida cristã”. Na Eucaristia encontramos a fonte da nossa identidade e da nossa missão no mundo. Na Eucaristia encontramos o alimento que nos fortalece para a vida e que nos cura das feridas do pecado. O nosso encontro com o nosso Senhor na Eucaristia deveria ser uma das coisas que mais ansiamos, mas não podemos negar que muitas vezes deixamos de responder a Jesus na Eucaristia. Também devemos admitir que há muitos católicos que não entendem a importância da Eucaristia, e mesmo entre os católicos há um número significativo que nega a presença real de Jesus na Eucaristia.

À luz disso, é cada vez mais urgente refletir sobre o que somos chamados a acreditar sobre a Eucaristia e porquê. O fato de que a Eucaristia é o Corpo e Sangue de Cristo não é algo que a Igreja inventou. Esta crença vem das próprias palavras de Jesus. Jesus apresenta a verdade sobre o que Ele está nos dando na Eucaristia em termos muito concretos, e podemos ver que ele está falando concretamente e não simbolicamente porque este ensinamento é o único que fez com que os discípulos de Jesus se afastassem e o deixassem em grandes números como vemos no Evangelho de João (Jo 6,66) Houve quem não compreendeu o que Jesus quis dizer e houve outros que compreenderam, mas não aceitaram este ensinamento. Embora muitos tenham se afastado, Jesus nunca respondeu dizendo que estava apenas brincando ou mudando o que havia ensinado. O que ele ensinou é verdade. A Eucaristia é o dom pleno e generoso de um Deus que nos ama tanto que o seu único desejo é aproximar-se de nós para podermos nos aproximar dele, e dar-nos sua vida para nos fortalecer no nosso caminho pela vida e podermos compartilhar a vida eterna e glória com ele.

Portanto, o que devemos fazer como discípulos é duplo. Primeiro, devemos aceitar o que Jesus ensinou e, segundo, devemos pedir a Jesus que nos guie para podermos entender ainda mais claramente o dom da Eucaristia. Devemos fazer isso não apenas para enriquecer a nossa própria vida de fé, mas também para podermos cumprir o nosso papel como embaixadores do Senhor e sair e compartilhar esse grande presente e boa nova com os outros. -- Pe. My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, I wanted to follow up on last weekend’s announcements regarding the changing of our daily Mass schedule. We need a schedule which is thorough enough to serve the needs of our parishioners, but also flexible enough that Father Eduardo and I can cover it, and even when one of us is on retreat, vacation or sick the other one can cover it without needing to ask for too many visiting priests to help fill the gaps. I am grateful that we have priests to call upon when we have a need, but many of you may not realize that they are usually given a stipend. The usual priest stipend for coming to cover one of our Masses is $50 for a daily Mass and $100 for a Sunday Mass. As we continue to work towards greater financial stability this is one expense I’d rather avoid. This schedule also allows for Father Eduardo and me to take our days off. Going forward Father Eduardo’s days off will be Tuesday and Wednesday. My days off will continue to be Thursday and Friday. This new schedule will go into effect on July 1. As with everything we do, these Masses times and locations may change at a later date depending on our clergy and the needs of our collaborative. Meus queridos irmãos e irmãs em Cristo, eu queria acompanhar os anúncios do último fim de semana sobre a mudança do nosso horário de Missas de dias de semana. Precisamos de uma agenda que seja completa o suficiente para atender às necessidades de nossos paroquianos, mas também flexível o suficiente para que padre Eduardo e eu possamos cobri-la, e mesmo quando um de nós está em retiro, de férias ou doente, o outro pode cobri-lo sem precisar pedir muitos padres visitantes para ajudar a preencher as vagas. Sou grato por termos sacerdotes a quem recorrer quando temos necessidade, mas imagino que muitos de vocês não sabem que esses padres geralmente recebem um estipêndio. O estipendio normal do padre para vir cobrir uma de nossas missas é de $ 50 para uma missa diária e $ 100 para uma missa dominical. À medida que continuamos trabalhando para obter maior estabilidade financeira, essa é uma despesa que prefiro evitar. Esse horário também permite que eu e o padre Eduardo tiremos nossos dias de folga. Daqui para frente, os dias de folga do padre Eduardo serão terça e quarta-feira. Meus dias de folga continuarão sendo quinta e sexta-feira. Este novo horario entrará em vigorno 1º de julho. Como tudo o que fazemos, esses horários e locais das Missas podem mudar posteriormente, dependendo de nosso clero e das necessidades de nossa colaborativa.
