During this ceremony, Bishop Mathieu will receive the episcopal consecration at the hands of Archbishop Damphousse assisted by Bishop Emeritus of Ottawa-Cornwall Terrence Prendergast, and Bishop Noël Simard of the Diocese of Valleyfield. He will also receive the religious symbols of his office of bishop: the mitre, the pastoral staff, and the episcopal ring.
As auxiliary bishop, Bishop Mathieu will assist the Archbishop in his teaching, sanctification, and governance functions within the archdiocese. His help will be invaluable in advancing the Mission of the Church both from the administrative and pastoral points of view.
Bishop Mathieu was born in Quebec in 1961. His first vows were taken in 1980 with the Marist Fathers in Washington, DC. He was ordained a priest on 15 August 1987 after studying theology at Saint-Paul University. Afterward, he worked at the Séminaire des Pères Maristes in Quebec (1984-1989). He resumed his studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome where he received a Licentiate in sacred scripture (SSL). He ministered in Quebec for a few years (1993-1995) before returning to Saint-Paul University to work and complete his Ph.D.
He remained at the university working as a professor of Old Testament and biblical languages in the Faculty of Theology and as Dean of the faculty (2014-2018). The following year, he was elected as Provincial Superior of the Canadian Marist Fathers, a position he held while continuing to teach as an Associate Professor at Saint-Paul University until his nomination as Auxiliary Bishop.
