Our WWP women's bible study groups are currently taking a summer respite. We will take some time to refresh our bodies and spirits, and in the meantime, we want you to know that we plan to offer the following bible studies both virtually, via Zoom, and in-person, depending on your interest. Iodine Deficiency in Women
Where Can You Get the Iodine You Need?
Dr. Stephen Chaney writes, " It shouldn't be happening. The introduction of iodized salt in the 1920's virtually eliminated iodine deficiency in this country. However, in just the past twenty years the incidence of iodine deficiency has increased 3-8-fold in women of childbearing age. Recent studies have estimated that today 30-40% of women of childbearing age are iodine deficient." Dr. Chaney rightly points out that we have been told to cut back on sodium. Many Americans have thrown away the (iodized) saltshaker. Unfortunately, we still get a lot of salt from processed foods, and that salt is usually non-iodized. Also, when we do add salt to our foods it is usually the "healthier" designer salts like sea salt or Pink Himalayan Salt. While sea salt might have some iodine naturally the trendier versions are non-iodized. A third problem occurs when people follow such diets as the Paleo diet which bans salt. A recent study of women who followed the Paeo Diet for two years became iodine deficient.
The consequences of iodine deficiency, especially among women of childbearing age, are concerning. Iodine is essential for bone and neural development during fetal development and infancy. In a recent study, 44.3% of women in the study were iodine deficient. 22.5% of these women had moderate to severe iodine deficiency. Groups of women with iodine concentrations in the moderate to severe deficient range experience a significantly longer time to become pregnant.
Also, The American Academy of Pediatrics, The National Institutes of Health, and the World Health Organization have all declared that mild iodine deficiency during pregnancy can prevent normal cognitive development and reduce IQ levels in children.
Because iodine is so essential for a healthy pregnancy, the important question becomes, "Where can you get the iodine you need?" 1) Seafood (or seaweed, if you are vegetarian) are the best food sources of iodine. 2) Fruits and vegetables are a variable source of iodine, depending on where they were grown. That is because iodine levels in the soils vary tremendously from region to region. 3) This leaves multivitamins and prenatal vitamins as your best source. You should look for supplements that provide 150 mcg of iodine. Unfortunately, only 50% of prenatal supplements in the US even contain iodine.

Invisible Words Exhibit of Signs
Created by Homeless Now on Display in Washington, DC
Invisible Words, a public art exhibition featuring a curated collection of signs created by the homeless, is on display through June 30 at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, 901 G St., NW, Washington, DC. The display uses art to increase awareness, empathy, and compassion for people facing homelessness and dire poverty of resources. Invisible Words is brought to Washington, DC on behalf of the Ignatian Volunteer Corps (IVC). As a national service corps of men and women over 50, IVC works to empower and bring hope to people trapped by poverty and marginalization. Be sure to visit!
