Catholic Charities' Center for Immigration Legal & Support Services (CILSS) is currently hiring bilingual (English/Spanish) Immigration Social Services Case Managers. These positions, open in both San Mateo and San Francisco, will provide support to recent asylees as well as individuals who received visas after being victims of trafficking or crime.
This is a great opportunity for those who want to help newcomers become settled in the community and build their lives in a new home. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) continues to
reaffirm the importance of asylum and refugee programs for those who have been displaced. (Photo: Seminarian Ben Gerigk volunteering at Catholic Charities last summer.)
The bishops of California have expressed their strong opposition to Senate Constitutional Amendment (SCA) 10, which would enshrine abortion into California's constitution, saying that it "is so broad and unrestrictive that it would encourage and protect even late-term abortions, which most Californians oppose." Last week Kathleen Domingo, Executive Director of the California Catholic Conference (CCC), testified against the amendment (video above),
which has been fast-tracked in order to get it on the November ballot.
On Monday, June 20, the State Senate approved the amendment, which now goes to the Assembly. If approved by a two-thirds vote before June 30, it will be brought to California's voters this fall, and action will be needed to oppose the measure.
