Introduction to the Liturgy of the Word:
1 Kings 19:16b, 19–21 Elisha left everything to inherit Elijah’s prophetic role.
Psalm 16 “You are my inheritance, O Lord.”
Galatians 5:1, 13–18 A proper use of freedom includes service to others, motivated by love.
Luke 9:51–62 Jesus expects us to leave everything to follow him.
Following the Lord takes a total commitment. Elisha, tilling the field, sacrifices his oxen and plow when the LORD calls him to succeed Elijah. Saint Paul, who dramatically committed to preaching in the Lord’s name, calls us to serve each other according to the greatest commandment. In the Gospel, Jesus repeatedly invokes the kingdom of God when encountering would-be disciples, demanding they follow him wholeheartedly, without reservation, and without looking back. As we listen to God’s word, let us reflect upon our own response to Jesus’ call ~from Pastoral Patterns, Summer 2022
