Today's reflection compliments of Fr. Ron.
Our first reading and Gospel this Sunday give examples of being called to follow a new path in life. The prophet Elijah calls Elisha to leave his plowing in the field and take Elijah's place as a prophet. He is being asked suddenly to change his future path in life. In like manner, The Gospel gives us several examples of individuals that say they will follow Jesus but they ask for extra time to do other things first to get ready. In each example the request to follow Jesus is made with the intention that the decision be made without outside interference. We are reminded that the decision to follow Jesus is a all or nothing decision.
Once again Jesus gives us an example to make his point. To follow Jesus is like a person using an old hand held plow. You must hold on tight and look straight ahead and not look back. Looking back could cause you to go off course like a plow run amuck with no direction.
Jesus is using this common image of his time to let us know that to follow him is a full time commitment. Distractions come in many forms and can pull us in many directions. Our scriptures today point out how easy it may be to let our way of life keep us from answering the call of Jesus. Do we put our relationship with our Lord first or do we find excuses like those given in todays readings. We are asked to put distractions aside and with all our heart and soul walk beside the Lord. With his help the field we plow will always be fruitful in every way..
Peace,
Fr. Ron
