There is great beauty in how God has designed the Church. We have to remember that as much as the Church is an institution made up of human members, it is ultimately a divine institution established by Jesus to give us a path to grow in holiness and in communion with each other and with God. 

Within the Church, there are various vocations of life commitment, among them the call to marriage, the call to priesthood, and to the diaconate. One beautiful and essential part of the body of Christ which unfortunately is not as present within Church life as it has been in past generations is the presence of religious sisters and brothers. Since I arrived in Stoughton, we’ve had the presence of Sister Anne at our 9:30am Mass at St. James and she’s done tremendous work with some of our young people that have needed sacramental preparation outside of the typical ages for religious education, but I wager that many of you might still not know much about who she is or about the religious community that she belongs to. I have had a great love for religious life for a very long time. Growing up in El Paso and even after moving to the territory of the Archdiocese of Boston all the parishes I had attended were staffed by priests who were members of religious communities such as Franciscans and the Sons of Divine Providence, also known as the Don Orione Fathers. In fact, before discerning a call to the diocesan priesthood I first looked at joining various religious communities until God made it clear that my path was to serve the Church as a priest in the Archdiocese of Boston. Apart from religious orders that included priests and brothers I’ve also been blessed to know many communities of religious sisters. One of my good friends, now also a priest in the Archdiocese of Boston, once joked that I knew a religious sister in each state. At the time it wasn’t true but now it feels as though it may be. 

Among the communities which I’ve known the longest are the Daughters of St. Paul and the Discalced Carmelite Sisters in Roxbury. Those two communities are good examples of two sides of religious life, the active and the contemplative. The active orders are the ones we are most likely to see, they run apostolates such as the bookstore which the Daughters of St. Paul run and they serve ministries in parishes and schools. Contemplative religious orders are most often cloistered which means they leave the monastery grounds only for essential things such as doctor’s appointments. They may do particular works to support themselves such as baking the hosts we use at Mass but their lives are largely dedicated to prayer. It is my firm conviction that if we’ve survived through everything, we’ve been through as a Church it is in great part because of the prayers of the people of God and especially the prayers of these faithful religious sisters and brothers. The Carmelites in Roxbury are one of the hidden gems of our Archdiocese. The neighborhood has continually changed around them but they remain committed to praying for their neighbors and for the needs of the Body of Christ. I was asked this year to be the homilist for their triduum in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Over the next few weeks, I’d like to share with you some of the excerpts from my homilies. Há uma grande beleza em como Deus estabeleceu a Igreja. Devemos lembrar que, por mais que a Igreja seja uma instituição formada por membros humanos, ela é uma instituição divina estabelecida por Jesus para nos dar um caminho para crescer em santidade e em comunhão uns com os outros e com Deus.

Na Igreja, existem várias vocações de compromisso de vida, entre elas o matrimônio, o sacerdócio e o diaconato. Uma parte bela e essencial do corpo de Cristo que infelizmente não está tão presente na vida da Igreja de hoje como nas gerações passadas é a presença de irmãos e irmãs religiosas. Desde que cheguei em Stoughton, tivemos a presença da Irmã Anne na nossa missa das 9h30 no St. James. Ela tem feito um trabalho tremendo com alguns das nossas crianças que precisaram de preparação sacramental fora das idades típicas para educação religiosa, mas aposto que muitos de vocês podem ainda não saber muito sobre quem ela é ou sobre a comunidade religiosa a que ela pertence.

Eu tenho um grande amor pela vida religiosa há muito tempo. Crescendo em El Paso e mesmo após de mudar-me para o território da Arquidiocese de Boston, todas as paróquias que frequentei eram pastoreadas por padres que eram membros de comunidades religiosas como os Franciscanos e os Filhos da Divina Providência, também conhecidos como os Orionitas. De fato, antes de discernir um chamado ao sacerdócio diocesano, procurei ingressar em várias comunidades religiosas até que Deus deixou claro que o meu caminho era servir à Igreja como sacerdote da Arquidiocese de Boston. Além de ordens religiosas que incluíam padres e irmãos, também tive a bênção de conhecer muitas comunidades de irmãs religiosas. Um dos meus bons amigos, que agora também é padre da nossa arquidiocese de Boston, brincava dizendo que eu conhecia uma religiosa em cada um dos estados de este país. Na época não era verdade, mas agora acho que provavelmente é.

Entre as comunidades que conheço há mais tempo estão as Paulinas e as Irmãs Carmelitas Descalças no Roxbury. Essas duas comunidades são bons exemplos de duas faces da vida religiosa, a ativa e a contemplativa. As ordens ativas são as que temos mais probabilidade de ver, administram apostolados como a livraria que as Paulinas dirigem e atendem ministérios em paróquias e escolas. As ordens religiosas contemplativas são mais frequentemente enclausuradas, o que significa que elas saem do mosteiro apenas para coisas essenciais, como consultas médicas. Elas podem fazer trabalhos específicos para se sustentar, como assar as hóstias que usamos na missa, mas suas vidas são amplamente dedicadas à oração. É minha firme convicção que, se sobrevivemos a tudo o que passamos como Igreja, é em grande parte por causa das orações do povo de Deus e principalmente das orações desses fiéis irmãos e irmãs religiosas. As Carmelitas de Roxbury são uma das joias escondidas da nossa Arquidiocese. O bairro mudou continuamente em torno delas, mas elas continuam comprometidas em orar por seus vizinhos e pelas necessidades do Corpo de Cristo. Este ano pediram-me para ser o pregador do seu tríduo em honra da nossa Senhora do Carmo. Nas próximas semanas, gostaria de compartilhar com vocês alguns trechos das minhas homilias durante o tríduo.
