The three nights of the Triduum of our Lady of Mount Carmel focus on honoring Mary under various titles. This year I chose the titles Mother of Unity, Queen of Peace, and of course, the final night was the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. When I began the first Mass honoring Mary as Mother of Unity, the initial thought people might have had was the ongoing refrain that seems to rise in commentary on our present historical moment about how divided we are and how entrenched people seem to be in polarized views. There is some truth to that, but in order to answer the needs of our historical moment, it is far more vital that each of us answers the deep desires of our hearts and that is where our Lady as Mother of Unity leads us. She draws us to deep and abiding communion with her Son and with each other. This desire for union is a strong hallmark of Carmelite Spirituality.

Mary shows us the humility and trust we need to seek in fostering unity with God. She also shows us the importance of pondering and contemplation which this union with God calls forth in us. Then there’s the next step. The human temptation when thinking about a deep union with God is to keep such a relationship as a private treasure, but Mary teaches us that the fruit of this union is service. It’s the going forth to share the good news with others, the going forth to bring our gifts to address the needs of others, and of course the bringing of others to a relationship with Jesus.

That God desired that the incarnation establish a deep union between us and Him, and also among us with each other is evident in the beautiful words we read in the seventeenth chapter of the Gospel of Saint John, which is known as Jesus’ priestly prayer. It’s best summed up in the line, “That all may be one,” which is the burning desire of our Lord’s heart. This desire for unity begins to be fulfilled when we realized how closely God has desired to unite himself with us. The Maronite rite of the Catholic Church expresses what God has done for us beautifully in their prayer at the altar when during the consecration the priest prays, “you have united o Lord your divinity with our humanity and our humanity with your divinity. You have assumed what is ours and have given us what is yours, for the grace and salvation of all.” As we have received from God so then God sends us forth to live out.

However, any action on our part must be rooted in prayer.  Most of us are not called to live apart from the world. We’re not called to go find a secluded spot where we can live permanently in silent contemplation. However, the intuition of those early Christians who first went up to Mount Carmel and established hermitages of prayer should speak powerfully to us as it spoke to Saint Teresa of Ávila as she sought to reform the life of Carmel. Saint Teresa encourages us to draw aside from our busyness and also head inward in our prayer into the depths of our hearts where we discover God who calls us to dwell with Him. Not all of us are called to be hermits, but each of us is called to create a space in our hearts, and a regular time in our daily routines where we draw aside to be with the Lord. In our prayer, as we seek a deeper union with God we inevitably find that He has been seeking us all the more.—Fr. Carlos

As três noites do Tríduo da nossa Senhora do Carmo concentram-se em honrar Maria nos seus vários títulos. Este ano escolhi os títulos: mãe da Unidade, Rainha da Paz, e claro, a última noite foi a festa da nossa Senhora do Carmo. Quando comecei a primeira missa em homenagem à Maria como Mãe da Unidade, o pensamento inicial que as pessoas poderiam ter era o refrão contínuo que parece surgir em comentários sobre o nosso presente momento histórico sobre como estamos divididos e como as pessoas parecem estar entrincheiradas em visões polarizadas. Há alguma verdade nisso, mas para responder às necessidades do nosso momento histórico, é muito mais vital que cada um de nós responda aos desejos profundos dos nossos corações e é para lá que a nossa Senhora como Mãe da Unidade nos leva. Ela atrai-nos para uma comunhão profunda e permanente com o seu Filho e uns com os outros. Esse desejo de união é uma forte marca da Espiritualidade Carmelita.

Maria nos mostra a humildade e a confiança que devemos buscar para criar a unidade com Deus. Ela também nos mostra a importância da reflexão e contemplação que esta união com Deus suscita em nós. Então há o próximo passo. A tentação humana ao pensar numa união profunda com Deus é manter tal relacionamento como um tesouro privado, mas Maria nos ensina que o fruto dessa união é o serviço. É sair para compartilhar as boas novas com os outros, sair para trazer os nossos dons para atender às necessidades dos outros e, é claro, levar outros a um relacionamento com Jesus.

Que Deus desejou que a encarnação estabelecesse uma união profunda entre nós e Ele, e também entre nós uns com os outros, fica evidente nas belas palavras que lemos no capítulo dezessete do Evangelho de São João, que é conhecido como oração sacerdotal de Jesus. É melhor resumido na linha: “Para que todos sejam um”, que é o desejo ardente do coração do nosso Senhor. Este desejo de unidade começa a ser realizado quando percebemos quão intimamente Deus desejou unir-se a nós. O rito maronita da Igreja Católica expressa lindamente o que Deus fez por nós na sua oração no altar quando, durante a consagração, o sacerdote reza: “Você uniu, senhor, sua divindade com a nossa humanidade e a nossa humanidade com sua divindade. Você assumiu o que é nosso e deu-nos o que é seu, para a graça e salvação de todos”. Assim como recebemos de Deus, então Deus nos envia para viver.

No entanto, qualquer ação da nossa parte deve estar enraizada na oração. A maioria de nós não é chamada a viver separados do mundo. Não somos chamados a procurar um lugar isolado onde possamos viver permanentemente em contemplação silenciosa. No entanto, a intuição daqueles primeiros cristãos que foram os primeiros em subir ao Monte Carmelo e estabeleceram ermidas de oração deve falar poderosamente para nós, como falou á Santa Teresa de Ávila quando ela procurou reformar a vida do Carmelo. Santa Teresa nos encoraja a nos afastarmos das nossas ocupações e também a nos interiorizar na nossa oração nas profundezas dos nossos corações, onde descobrimos Deus que nos chama a habitar com Ele. Nem todos nós somos chamados a ser eremitas, mas cada um de nós é chamado a criar um espaço nos nossos corações e um tempo regular nas nossas rotinas diárias, onde nos separamos para estar com o Senhor. Na nossa oração, à medida que buscamos uma união mais profunda com Deus, inevitavelmente descobrimos que Ele tem nos procurado ainda mais. — Pe. Carlos
